Adam Chau is a cornucopia of talent. He’s a ceramic designer, a curator, an educator, and a writer. And he’s highly successful at all of it.
As a ceramic designer, he pursues industrial production methods while keeping traditional craft paradigms. His work has been displayed at the Salone del Mobile at Rossana Orlandi in Milan, Italy, and the NADA art fair in New York City, and he received the 2018 NCECA Emerging Artist Award. “Receiving the award feels like the ceramics field has acknowledged the changing landscape of ceramic production and that my research has played a pivotal role in public perception of industrial and digital manufacturing,” Chau says.
As Clay Art Center’s program manager, Chau runs a robust and growing exhibition roster, as well as adult-education programs, reaching 12,000 people each year. He’s also curated critically acclaimed shows, including REINVENTED, which features 13 exhibiting artists who are forward-thinking in hybridizing the handmade-digital genre, and is traveling to four locations in the US. “Completing REINVENTED was my most fulfilling moment — it combined exhibition, education, and hands-on learning, to fully encompass what it means to be a ceramic artist in the digital age,” Chau says.
“I have a very supportive team at Clay Art Center; I feel that I am encouraged to push boundaries and foster my community in many different ways,” he adds. “This support makes me want to make Westchester a hub for creativity and show the rest of the country that we are a very special place.”
