New Yorkers should be expecting more than the usual amount of traffic this Labor Day Weekend, according to AAA Northeast. AAA predicts there will 35.5 million weekend travelers in the country.
About 86 percent of those travelers will go by car, while 7 percent are expected to fly. Based on last years travel volumes, 1.5 million people are expected to use the three metropolitan New York City airports, according to AAA.
A contributing factor for the record-breaking travel this year is the cheapest gas prices the nation has seen in 10 years, according to AAA. This increases travel via car, as gas prices in New York City are almost a whole dollar cheaper than last year.
“Cheap gas, strong new vehicle sales, and an improved household economy continue to motivate travelers to take a trip, continuing strong road travel numbers in a year that has seen Americans drive more than three trillion miles,” wrote Robert Sinclair Jr., media relations manager for AAA Northeast, in the report.
The report says that Tropical Storm Erika could interrupt vacation plans, however. The storm is expected to hit all along the east coast, including popular vacation spots such as Florida, South Carolina, and Virginia, to name a few.
No matter the mode of transportation, expect traffic to be busier than normal – and plan accordingly.
