National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June, but no matter what time of the year it is, heading out to find the best local donuts is always a fun excursion. We’ve rounded up the best of several donut varieties including classics like glazed and jelly, plus others you may not have tried before (maple bacon, anyone?), so you’ve got choices. It’s not a surprise that the jelly donut at Enrico’s took first place in Westchester Magazine’s jelly donut taste test, and they’re still going strong. This donut is made in the old-fashioned style from a recipe that’s been handed down through generations. Just one bite and you’ll instantly know why.

Sunshine Bagels took home an editors’ pick for its toasted coconut donut at the 2014 Best of Westchester awards. The donut’s crunchy exterior contrasts with its moist, soft interior, making each bite its own bit of paradise.

This farm and orchard makes a mean apple cider donut. It’s so good, in fact, that people drive from New Jersey and Long Island once they’re in season just to get one. You won’t go wrong with any of the choices: sugar, cinnamon sugar, or plain.
130 Hardscrabble Rd., North Salem
Boxer Donut—the smallest shop in Nyack—definitely packs a punch. One of its most notorious offerings is its maple bacon donut, and it’s easy to see why: the donut is infused and topped with candied bacon (which is soaked in maple syrup), then coated in caramelized sugar and left to bake for hours—well worth the drive across the river.

Everyone knows that Galloway’s jelly donuts are great, but so are their glazed donuts. Galloway’s, which won the Best of Westchester readers’ pick for best donuts in 2005, 2007, and 2013, has been open since 1962, and their glazed donuts have always been one of their best sellers.

Served only on Sundays, Topps Bakery’s custard donuts quickly fly off the shelves. The custard donuts are available with chocolate or vanilla icing. If you go on another day of the week, you can always try one of Topps Bakery’s 221 other baked goods.

The winner of our glazed donut taste test, Ossining Bakery’s glazed donut garnered glowing remarks from the editorial team at Westchester Magazine. Editorial Director Robert Schork scribbled a five in the score column and said they had the “best consistency and density.” Assistant Editor Scott Simone said they were the best overall (but lacked glaze), while Associate Art Director Jess Brown praised the “slightly buttery flavor.”
