9 Fun Activities to Check Out in Westchester This Week

Great food, famous comics, and international film are just a few of this week’s best reasons to put down the remote and get out of the house.

Thursday 9/20

First up: Dubrovnik, Westchester’s favorite Croatian restaurant, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a special $55 prix fixe buffet dinner. (Drinks, tax, and tip extra.) The evening will also feature live music and raffles for prizes like gift cards, bottles of wine, free dinners, cooking classes, and even a five-day stay for two on the rustic Croatian island of Lopud!

For a little after-dinner entertainment, Comedy Central alum Carlos Mencia will be dropping by Yonkers Comedy Club in the Ridge Hill Mall for back-to-back shows at 7:30 and 9:45 p.m. Tickets are $40 plus a two drink minimum. More into classic comedy? The Bedford Playhouse will be hosting a one-day-only screening of Love, Gilda, the heartbreaking biographical film of Gilda Radner, as told through home movies, audio, and personal journals. Featuring contemporaneous stars and devoted followers, the film will be followed by a Q&A with producer and SNL writer Alan Zweibel.

Also on the film front, the Jacob Burns Film Center is kicking off its Contemporary Arab Cinema series, with the family comedic-drama Wajib, a film which is already racking up awards for director Annemarie Jacir, including Palestine’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Jacir herself will appear for a Skype Q&A after the screening, while additional films in the series will continue to play through September 27.

Friday 9/21

Head down to the Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers for a little family fun time with a free outdoor screening of Disney’s animated classic The Lion King. Pre-show activities start at 6 p.m., and the show itself starts around 7:15, at sundown. Get there early to grab a good seat, then take shifts with the kids while you go off and get some shopping done pre-movie!

Saturday 9/22

At noon, the Yonkers Public Library will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with the world premiere of the bilingual children’s play Mi abuelo don Quijote/My Grandfatherdon Quixote. Children will construct their own windmills to use during the play, which will start at 2 p.m.

Fable, Ossining’s farm-to-table model for sustainable agriculture, is hosting Farm Fest 2018 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Pick up farm-fresh produce, feed some chickens, soak in the live music, and maybe even pick up a few locally made pieces from artisan vendors.

Another event of note back at the Jacob Burns Film Center: To celebrate the life and passions of director/producer Jonathan Demme, who for more than a decade hosted eclectic international films at the theater, the JBFC and Demme family are relaunching the series. Now called Jonathan Demme’s Rarely Seen Cinema: Jenny Lumet Selects, the series will run until October 21 and feature works chosen by Lumet, Demme’s longtime friend and colleague. Lumet will be on hand for a Q&A session following the first film in the series, Stormy Weather, starring Lena Horne, Bojangles Robinson, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, and more great African-American performers of the early 20th Century.
