If you dread the idea of “going gray,” take heart: Gray is everywhere, on women (men, too!) of all ages. The gray-on-purpose trend has been kicked up a few notches in 2018, with creative, even artful, shades, techniques, and color combos. Thinking of hopping on the gray train? Stylist/colorist Lauren Maglio of Josef Mikel Salon in Pleasantville shares her advice.
Ice, Ice, Baby
The ice-blonde or silver look “is best for those with blond hair. If you’ve got dark hair, it’s going to take a few sessions.”
White Lightening
“White hair with silver streaks adds dimension. It’s also great for people who are starting to go gray.”
Rosé All Day
Thinking pink? “Depending on the shade you’re starting with, you might have to significantly lighten the base and tone. It may be three or four processes in a day using highlights and lowlights of silver and pink hues.”
Naturally Daring
Want to dip a toe (or two) in without taking the plunge? Try blending gray with your natural color. “A balayage technique is used by sweeping the color though small sections of hair to create a natural look.”
Silvery Ombré
“This requires lightening at the beginning and then a highlight. We’d decide what colors you want through the toning process: light to dark or dark to light. At the end, it’s combed through to combine the color.”
