5 Restaurants With Amazing Tiradito Menus In Westchester

​Peruvian cuisine is one of our under-explored treasures, but as Latin food becomes more popular, certain dishes are catching on. Enter tiradito, a cousin of sashimi that reflects the influence of the large number of Japanese immigrants in Peru. Unlike ceviche, in which the fish is cured (essentially “cooked”) in citrus juice, tiradito features still-raw fish, usually sliced thin like sashimi, dressed right before serving in a sauce typically containing lime, aji amarillo (a Peruvian chili pepper), garlic, and oil. This combination of sashimi’s stark freshness with Peruvian flavors is a must-try. Here are five places in Westchester where you’ll find tiradito menus:

Patrias (New Rochelle): This Spanish-Peruvian restaurant just received a glowing review in the New York Times, but our own Julia Sexton called it a year ago: “The winner was this silky tiradito: cool salmon ceviche with aji amarillo and potatoes Huancaino style.”

Quenas (Harrison): At this elegant, traditional Peruvian restaurant, enjoy your tiradito de pescado (described on the menu as “fresh fish marinated in lemon juice and Peruvian yellow peppers) while listening to Peruvian folk music—on the lantern-lit patio, weather permitting.

Sonora (Port Chester): Chef Rafael Palomino’s original Latin fusion restaurant serves this dish only at lunch, which is only on Friday (more’s the pity): a Chilean-style tiradito of sliced salmon in blood orange and citrus mojito sauce, topped with roasted red peppers whose texture melds perfectly with the salmon, and crushed potato chips and sliced onion for a little crunch.

Acuario (Port Chester): Fish tanks abound at this bustling, family-style Peruvian restaurant specializing, naturally, in seafood. They offer several tiraditos—salmon, tuna, and pollock—sliced on the thicker side, in a lime and yellow pepper sauce you’ll want to drink by itself, sprinkled with cilantro and served with a hunk of sweet potato.

Paloma (Stamford, CT): Chef Aarón Sánchez, co-star of Food Network’s Chopped, recently opened this three-story Latin fusion restaurant where you’ll find hamachi tiradito in aji rocoto sauce, garnished with crispy hominy, that won a rave on this blog, as well as tuna tiradito with mango aji amarillo sauce and Louisiana caviar.
