5 Places To Adopt A Cat In Westchester

June is, among other fun things, National Adopt A Cat Month, and if you’re looking for a feline friend, here are five local places to start your search.

New Rochelle Humane Society

The New Rochelle Humane society is a private, non-profit organization that provides homes for lost, abandoned, and mistreated animals. In order to adopt, prospective adopters must be at least 18 years old and must provide proof of home ownership. To ensure that your cat is in great shape, the adoptions at the New Rochelle Humane Society include a spay or neuter procedure, a feline AIDS/leukemia test, vaccinations, deworming, microchip registration, Science Diet cat food, a cat carrier, and a follow-up veterinary exam.

SCPA of Westchester

The SCPA of Westchester is not only a no-kill shelter, but it is the only humane society in Westchester empowered to enforce laws related to animal cruelty. All adopted animals come with a free veterinarian checkup that will be honored within seven days of the adoption. There are currently more than 20 cats up for adoption, all of different breeds and ages.

Pets Alive Westchester

Pets Alive is one of the oldest no-kill organizations in the United States, and provides a home for animals from every locale—whether it’s an animal being saved from euthanasia or an owner leaving their pet. This shelter has pet counselors that can help find the best match for you, and requires that all canine members of the household meet the cat you are interested in, so that you can find the perfect cat for you and your other furry friends.

Pet Rescue

Pet Rescue is not a typical animal shelter: there is no official location. Instead, it’s made up of a small group of volunteers that take care of cats (and dogs) until they are adopted. To adopt, you must be over the age of 21, within a 90-mile radius of Larchmont, and ready to adopt within seven to 10 days.

Pet Adoption League

Over the past 12 years, this non-profit organization has saved more than 3,500 animals. Animals at this shelter are evaluated for temperament to ensure that they are matched with a compatible owner. In order to adopt, a pre-adoption form must be completed, as well a vet reference and an interview. Plus, the whole family must be present during the adoption.
