With CrossFit’s annual open less than a month away, we felt it was prime time to run down some of the county’s must-visit gyms. We checked out a lot of boxes this year and came away both out-of-breath and with a newfound appreciation for the range of Westchester’s functional fitness scene. The open — which is like CrossFit’s version of the playoffs, but everyone on earth can participate — is the perfect time to drop in and see why this trying regimen is still going strong.
Coaches with the Mostest
CrossFit Valkyrie
CrossFit Valkyrie is situated beside the Hudson River in Irvington, and boasts an array of up-to-date equipment as well as an expansive space. However, where this box really excels is the coaching. Zoey Utko, who also runs the box’s dedicated rowing classes, is one of the best CrossFit coaches we have encountered — and helped us get the hang of butterfly pull-ups in a single session.
Amazing Space
CrossFit Mount Kisco
This CrossFit box has been killing it for a while and with a spiffy new location at the heart of Mount Kisco, they are better now than ever. Case in point: CFMK took home the Best of Westchester CrossFit Gym this year. With a passionate head coach and a super clean and contemporary space, this one is definitely worth checking out.
OG
WestchesterFit
When it comes to firmly established CrossFit boxes it doesn’t get much better than CrossFit Westchester. Founded by Chris Guerrero, this gym — which has recently rebranded as WestchesterFit — was one of the first in the county and even sent a team to the CrossFit regionals this year (which is no small feat).
Perfect Programming
CrossFit The Flats
If you are looking for a gym that offers equal programming for both hardcore CrossFitters and those just starting out, look no further than this popular box. With quality coaches, a medium-sized space, and absolutely on point WODs, this is definitely among the county’s best CrossFit gyms.
Friend-Time Feel
CrossFit Pop
While this box might not have the fanciest gear or the hugest classes, a session here really does feel like you are working out in a garage with the boys. Featuring programming that includes a nice balance of straight-up strength training (we did dips the day I was here) and snappy WODs, this is among the local boxes worth a look.
