The kids got their day off from school; now it’s time for the grown-ups to have some fun!

Now that the kids are back in school after their three-day weekend, it’s time for the adults to kick back and have some fun. Here are 5 events just for the grown-ups going down in Westchester this week!

Westchester’s more seasoned residents will remember heady, bygone days of summering up in the Catskills, in the alliteratively named “Borscht Belt” of clubs, hotels, and sleepaway camps. Decades later, the ruins of those buildings stand testament both to the luxury once provided and the reclamation by nature of properties since abandoned. Our sister site Hudson Valley Magazine scored a fantastic interview with local photographer Marisa Scheinfeld this past summer, and now it’s Westchester’s turn. Scheinfeld will be on hand for the opening of her new traveling photography exhibit at Westchester Community College’s Fine Arts Gallery. The Borscht Belt, based on her photo essay collection of the same name, details the once plush edifices of her native Catskills, and is free to the public.

Looking to make some art of your own? OR are you more the type to hang a frame around that stain from where you accidentally spilled wine on the wall and decided to call it art? Either way, sign up for a “BYOB Loosen Up and Paint” workshop at the Rye Arts Center. Sessions are $65 per person (discounted for RAC members) and include all the supplies you need to make a lovely work to take home. No talent or experience is necessary, just a passion for the arts and/or a passion for getting a little boozy while you get bougie. A little vino with your Vermeer. A little drinky with your Dali. (You get the idea….)

Meanwhile, over in Pelham, The Picture House Regional Film Center is holding a special advance screening of director Peter Hutchings’ Then Came You. Starring Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Asa Butterfield (seriously, that kid is everywhere), the film follows teenage hypochondriac Calvin as he befriends the (actually) terminally ill Skye and the pair attempt to cross off all of Skye’s bucket list. Tickets are $15 ($12 for students, seniors, and TPH members), and include a discussion and Q&A with the director after the show. Acerbic, heart-wrenching and definitely not appropriate for all audiences, leave the kids at home for this one.

Saturday, January 26

This weekend, the Emelin Theatre welcomes the Leading Ladies of Broadway, a brand-new concert exclusive to the Emelin featuring some of Broadway’s most talented singers. Welcome the likes of Rona Figueroa (Les Mis, Miss Saigon), Sara Jean Ford (Phantom, Cats), Tony nominee Anika Larsen (Avenue Q, Xanadu, RENT), and Kissy Simmons (The Lion King). The evening will include musical performances, anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories, and even Q&A time with the audience! Tickets are $55.

If you prefer gut-busting to belting, Lucy’s Laugh Lounge in Pleasantville is hosting a similarly themed Women of a Certain Age comedy show. Created by “comics’ comic” Carole Montgomery, the show prominently features outstanding leading ladies of a different kind of stage: the kind traditionally backed by red brick and perhaps a saucy, glowing neon sign. This leg of the tour will spotlight Montgomery alongside Westchester comedy alum Regina DeCicco (yes, those DeCiccos!) and Ritu Chandra.
