3 Cultural Celebrations You Won’t Want to Miss This Week

Some seriously fun festivals and fĂȘtes make up our list of the best things to do in Westchester this week!

Westchester is home to wonderfully rich and diverse communities, several of which are hosting cultural festivals and celebrations this week guaranteed to fill your tummies and get your toes tapping, and just generally entertain al the other parts of your bodies as well. Check them out below!

August 2-5 — Yorktown Irish Festival

St. Pat’s isn’t the only game in town when it comes to celebrating Irish heritage. Whether by blood or just for the day, all are welcome to come down to the Yorktown Firehouse at 1916 Commerce St. for fun and food. Festivities include live music (both traditional and modern), Irish dancing, rides, beer and wine, and of course plenty of food! Opening night musical acts include the McLean Avenue Band as well as local favorite Joanie Madden & Cherish the Ladies. Admission is $5 with children 12 and under free. No outside food or drink is permitted but you’re encouraged to bring your own lounging chairs.
Thursday and Friday: 5-11 p.m.
Saturday: Noon-11 p.m.
Sunday: Noon -10 p.m.

August 3 — Shabbat on the Beach

Definitely not your traditional Friday night service, unless your last synagogue was located in Pismo Beach. Rye’s Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester will be holding a special Shabbat service at the Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary at Playland Park. Enjoy the tranquility of nature and reflect on the miracle of creation as you close out your week in a fun, family-friendly setting. Wine and noshes start at 6 p.m., followed by a brief service from 6:30 to 7:30. August 5-19 Annual Heritage of India Festival

Every year the Indian American Cultural Association of Westchester puts together one of the most fun and energetic cultural festivals around, drawing thousands for a full day of music, art, food, and traditional crafts. Guests can enjoy folk dance and other live performances, rangoli and mehendi (henna) art, and vendors showcasing a variety of wares at the merchandise bazaar. With food and culture representing every region of India, Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla is definitely the place to be this Sunday. The festival opens at 12:30 p.m. and runs until 6:30 p.m. Parking and admission are both free.
