Attend a CrossFit gym—or “box,” as adherents call it—and you will hear one word again and again: community. “Community carries these things,” says Phillip Itwaru, head coach and owner of CrossFit Mount Kisco. “Everyone is together, supporting each other.”
This support extends to every aspect of CrossFit, in which elements of powerlifting, gymnastics, calisthenics, and other disciplines are combined into an exhausting set of exercises called a WOD, or Workout of the Day. This broad range of physical challenges pushes attendees to their limits, all while concentrating on safety, proper form, and togetherness.
Westchester boasts a number of high-end boxes. Below are three of our favorites.
CrossFit Westchester, White Plains:
Considered the father of CrossFit in Westchester, Chris Guerrero runs this extremely popular box, one of the county’s first. Guerrero and his trainers lead a set of exercises for people at any level of experience. This box offers classes focusing on kids, mobility, endurance, and more. www.crossfitwestchester.com
NorthEast CrossFit, Eastchester:
This is a great, all-around CrossFit box with a large space and an extensive range of classes, including endurance, Olympic weightlifting, CrossFit kids, and standard CrossFit WODs. The coaching here is excellent, as is the attention and patience new attendees receive. www.northeastcrossfit.com
CrossFit Mount Kisco, Mount Kisco:
This is one of the most hardcore CrossFit boxes in Westchester. Those who want to truly push their limits and enjoy the most challenging WODs that CrossFit has to offer will love CrossFit Mount Kisco, which is attended by some of Westchester’s most elite competitive CrossFitters, as well as those just starting out. www.crossfitmountkisco.com
