2017's Hottest Hair and Makeup Trends

What you need to know in order to be trending from the neck up on your wedding day

Planning your wedding can be a dizzying process, but after the date is set, the caterer is booked, and the dress is ordered, you can finally sit down and be primped like a princess. That’s right, it’s time to focus on your hair and makeup! We’ve asked bridal hairstylist Stephany Donohue of Mount Kisco’s Magnolia & Pearl to give us tips and advice on what’s hot (and what’s not) in hair and makeup so that you can look jaw-droppingly gorgeous on your big day.

What are some of the biggest bridal makeup trends you’re seeing?

Bridal makeup trends have changed dramatically in the past few years. Among the trends are a bold lip and faux lashes. If you’re online, however, you’ll notice that Instagram and all of social media are saturated with the contouring and highlighting trend. This trend focuses on sculpting the facial features that are most flattering with the use of darker and lighter colors. When done incorrectly, contouring and highlighting can have a very plastered and unauthentic look. On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are many brides who love a classic, clean, and authentic look to their bridal makeup.

What trends are on the horizon for 2017 and beyond?

A classic, clean face will always be on the forefront of makeup, but the upcoming trends suggest bold matte lip colors on a neutral face. Faux lashes aren’t going away anytime soon either!

What makeup trends are totally over?

Skinny eyebrows, poignantly lined and super glossy lips as well as heavily lined eyes are definitely over and done with.

I’m hoping that contouring and highlighting will pack their bags and hit the road, but we shouldn’t hold our breaths for 2017!

What do you recommend to brides who aren’t sure about the look they want?

My advice to unsure brides is to go with an upgraded version of their everyday look. If a bride wears barely any makeup as her everyday look, I will always suggest a very natural look to her overall makeup with small upgrades such as lashes or more color to her lips for the big day.

What are the most important makeup areas?

Eyes are definitely a crucial part of a bride’s overall look. Too much or a wrong execution of the eyes can change everything!

How do you feel about false eyelashes?

Faux lashes are great for the right person. The importance of choosing a natural looking set of lashes can make or break the option of wearing them.

What are your three favorite makeup products?

My three favorite lip products are:

1. Ruby Woo by Mac: This blue-based bold matte red lip color is a fit for almost every skin color and tone.
2. Teddy by Mac: A bronze-toned eyeliner that adds just the right amount of shimmer to the eyes; it’s subtle enough for everyday use.
3. Bare Minerals Matte Powder Foundation: This foundation gives a flawless and natural look to the skin. It literally looks like you are wearing nothing but fabulous-looking skin.

Is it important to choose the hairstyle or the makeup first?

As a hairstylist, I would say that hair comes first. Makeup pulls everything together.

What would you say is a classic, timeless look?

A classic look would consist of softly curled hair (up or down), a clean natural face with a small amount of blush for color, black eyeliner, and a rosy lip.

What are the biggest mistakes brides make when choosing and/or applying makeup?

Among the many mistakes that can be made with makeup, selecting the wrong tone for foundation has to be in the top three. It is imperative to get the tone right in order to have a seamless look. Having the face and neck be totally different tones is enough to ruin the whole entire look.
