18 Great Golf Holes

Pros pick the most fun, most challenging, and their favorite shots around the county.

Maybe it’s the angle of the green, the width of the fairway, the interesting hazards, or simply the beautiful setting. Whatever the reason, certain golf holes seem to stand out.

As part of the Westchester/Hudson Valley Golf Guide that appeared in the May 2013 issue of Westchester Magazine, head pros from the county’s clubs were asked to talk about a favorite hole at their home course. Here’s an 18-hole sampling:

Anglebrook Golf Club (Lincolndale) #16 – 484 yards/Par 5: “If you go for it, your shot has to land soft, because the green slopes away from the fairway.”
(Rob Davis)

Ardsley Country Club (Ardsley) #6 – 430 yards/Par 4: “The toughest shot is the approach to the green. It’s uphill all the way, and the green itself is elevated with a false front.” (Jim Bender)

Brynwood Golf & Country Club (Armonk) #8 – 216 yards/Par 3: “The green has two tiers and is heavily undulating, so even when you get there, you’re not home yet.” (Josh Lowney)

Century Country Club (Purchase) #6 – 430 yards/Par 4: “Our sixth hole sets so perfectly into the landscape, it looks like it just grew there.” (Nelson Long)

Glen Arbor Golf Club (Bedford) #14 – 138 yards/Par 3: “I love the water setting, the wild flowers all around–and the Swilcan Burn Bridge replica gives it a wonderful look.” (Brian Crowell)

Hudson National Golf Club (Croton-on-Hudson) #18 – 470 yards/Par 4: “It’s aesthetically perfect. The views of the Hudson River from the tee are spectacular.” (Theron Harvey)

Leewood Golf Club (Eastchester) #18 – 408 yards/Par 4: “You have a shot coming into the green that has a creek down the right, and the green feeds down to the water.” (Dean Johnson)

Metropolis Country Club (White Plains) #17 – 350 yards/Par 4: “The green is elevated and small, almost like an island surrounded by bunkers and grass swales.” (Craig Thomas)

Old Oaks Country Club (Purchase) #13 – 420 yards/Par 4: “It’s the kind of hole you can play a lot of different ways.” (Bobby Heins)

Quaker Ridge Golf Club (Scarsdale) #9 – 143 yards/Par 3: “It slopes from right to left, and the ball will release from right to left in every instance.” (Rick Vershure)

Salem Golf Club (North Salem) #13 – 407 yards/Par 4: “Just about every shot on the 13th hole is intimidating.” (Charlie Poole)

Siwanoy Country Club (Bronxville) #4 – 511 yards/Par 5: “With a good drive with a little draw, there’s always a chance you can reach it in two.” (Grant Turner)

Sleepy Hollow Country Club (Scarborough) #18 – 426 yards/Par 4: “Between the strength of the hole and the view of the clubhouse in the background, it’s special.” (David Young)

Trump National Golf Club Westchester (Briarcliff Manor) #2 – 515 yards/Par 5: “The creek meanders all along the right-hand side, and it’s well bunkered.” (Carey Stephan)

Westchester Country Club, West Course (Rye) #13 – 419 yards/Par 4: “It’s a great combination of beauty and challenge.” (John Kennedy)

Whippoorwill Club (Armonk) #16 – 551 yards/Par 5: “Even a long, straight drive off the tee will leave you with an uphill approach with cross bunkers in play.” (Jim Wahl)

Winged Foot Golf Club, West Course (Mamaroneck) #3 – 216 yards/Par 3: “The narrow opening to the green gives it a visually intimidating view.” (Mike Gilmore)

Wykagle Country Club (New Rochelle) #5 – 397 yards/Par 4: “The tee is elevated, and you get to look at the stream that runs parallel to the fairway and then across it.” (Ben Hoffhine)
