U.S. News & World Report released their annual Best High School rankings list with public schools ranked at both the state and national level. 15 Hudson Valley high schools ranked within the top 500 nationwide, receiving gold medals for their academic achievement. 38 Hudson Valley schools ranked within the top 200 schools in New York State.
New York averaged the 3rd most gold medal schools nationwide (55 medals), following California (85) and Texas (65), though it was ranked 12th best for public high school education in the country.
To be qualified, a school must past a difficult 4-step process that determines whether or not it meets the needs of all students, and properly prepares them for future endeavors. In order to achieve a numeric rank, schools must pass steps 1-3 and receive a College Readiness Index of at least 20.91.
The first step in the qualification process is to see if the students of a particular school academically outperform other students in the state. Step two considers whether disadvantaged students performed at or better than state averages. Step three is an analysis of the school’s graduation rate, which must be 75 percent or higher. Lastly, the school must have a calculated college readiness index, which is the number of 12th graders who passed one AP exam, divided by the number of seniors as the school.
