Bedford House
There’s a lot to take in at this furnishings, gift, and fine consignment shop, an artfully staged showcase of distinctive objects for the home, from new furniture to intriguing antiques: a sculptural “deer head” mounted high among framed contemporary art and extravagant mirrors of all shapes and scale; a horse-shaped weather vane; an armchair covered in cow hair; or, perhaps, a teak dining-room table from Indonesia.

Beehive Designer Collective
This earthy boutique features the creative work of independent designers from around the US, most handcrafted and with a modern design perspective. The vibe is that of a seasonal market, with jewelry, accessories, apparel, décor, and small, affordable gifts existing in aesthetic harmony. (Mason jars and Om symbols are likely themes.) Look for monogrammed, enamel-and-silver pendants, or fashion-forward swimsuits from emerging local designers, plus artful ceramic mugs, organic skin products, baby and kids items, natural-material totes, and notecards adorned with stark, thoughtful typography.

Charles Department Store
The old-timey “Main Street” concept behind this family-owned department store has worked for the past 90 years, but the product housed in the creaky, tin-ceiling Victorian is the latest and greatest, from good-value brands like Cuisinart, Weber, and Le Creuset; Barbour, Patagonia, and Pendleton; and Sorel, Hunter, and UGG. Besides kitchenware, grills, and all-weather boots and outerwear, surprises include Eileen Fisher apparel and gourmet foodstuffs.

Churchills of Mount Kisco
Co-founded by a fashion-industry vet, this luxury boutique for both men and women serves the socialite Northern Westchester set, and those who want to dress well (think cashmere, fur, and European styles). Designer casual wear, outerwear, and footwear are all in the mix, along with a brief selection of leather goods and jewelry. Loyal fans call the store “better than Barneys,” with “wearable and cool men’s clothes” and “the best and most interesting collections.”

The King’s Scribe
President (and Chappaqua resident) Bill Clinton has been spotted at this charming paper goods shop with a fun-and-functional selection of modern announcements and crafty-cute gifts and accessories: colored-glass jar candles, critter-patterned wrapping paper, bright desk items (fancifully designed Rifle Paper Co. notebooks, personalized memo pads, playful pencil pouches, et al.), and pretty striped scarves.

While in Katonah, check out Italy Direct’s Italian-imported suits and sportswear, discounted up to 40 percent (or head to Family Britches in Chappaqua for country-club fashions for ladies and gents with flair). For something quirky and eclectic, pore over the out-of-the-box novelties, furnishings, and knickknacks (some vintage or “pre-loved”) at Suburban Groove.
Bedford Hills is quality consignment territory, with the Preppy Turtle’s like-new threads from “better brands” (Lilly Pulitzer, Jacadi, Ralph Lauren, etc.) for kids, teens, and women; Penny Pincher serves up sought-after designer (Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermès) apparel, shoes, bags, jewelry, and more. Vintage is just that, cluttered with ’50s through ’80s memorabilia and antiques and funky, designer couture straight from Hollywood’s closets.
