You Have to See This $13 Million Modern-Day Gilded Mansion

With nine bedrooms, and nearly 5,000 sq ft of closet space, this stone-built manor — born from Millionaires’ Row — is fit for a king.

Driving up to the ultra-luxurious Greystone on Hudson development in Tarrytown, you can almost feel the ghosts of the Gilded Age captains of industry that used to call the area home. And that’s no accident. The development is named for Greystone Castle, the Millionaires’ Row mansion owned by John D. Rockefeller’s partner in Standard Oil, Josiah Macy.

“Greystone is born out of this stretch of land called Millionaires’ Row [South Broadway in Irvington/Tarrytown], where prestigious families like the Lehmans, the Astors, and the Rockefellers built estates,” explains Andy Todd, president of Greystone Mansion Group, the developer behind the project. “Our intention was to create this timeless place that marries the most incredible architecture with today’s convenience.”

“Incredible” doesn’t quite cut it as a description for 6 Carriage Trail, a 24,000 sq ft Greystone showstopper currently on the market for $12.9 million. The home — a stone manor made from Manhattan schist, an extremely rare stone from the same glacier that formed Central Park — sits on nearly three acres overlooking the Hudson River. (Buyers can purchase adjacent lots for additional acreage.) The nine bedrooms and 11 full bathrooms are joined by a dizzying array of spaces including two kitchens, three laundry rooms, a master bedroom with two sitting rooms (including separate his and hers bathrooms), and multiple entertaining areas. A home theater, wine cellar, two-story mahogany library (modeled after JP Morgan’s original library in Manhattan), and an indoor sports complex complete with basketball court and other amenities, add to the over-the-top appeal.

Design details include hand-hewn floors, bespoke custom woodworking, fine cabinetry, and custom-crafted mahogany windows. Outside lies more than 5,000 square feet of covered porches and verandas, while a state-of-the-art geothermal heating and cooling system adds a sustainable touch, and keeps utility bills in check.

No ordinary home, 6 Carriage Trail — like all the mansions in the Greystone enclave — is made for an out-of-the-ordinary buyer. Though Todd is tight-lipped on specifics — “Part of what our buyers are seeking is privacy,” he explains — he lists “Wall Street guys, celebrity types, athletes, and actors/actresses” as the typical clientele. And it hasn’t been hard to find them. “If you want a home at this level in Westchester, it’s this or nothing. For $13 million in Manhattan, you’ll get an apartment with maybe 4,000 square feet; here, you’re getting a giant compound with all the amenities.”
