New research from RENTCafé reveals that the sixth borough has created as much new housing as the three next largest cities combined.

As COVID-19 cases continue to spike and more companies shift towards working from home, New York City renters are continuing to flee their dense, costly neighborhoods for suburban living.

For renters seeking new units, Yonkers is the New York suburb with the highest number of apartments built in the last five years, according to new data released by national rental service RENTCafé. In that time, Yonkers has added over 1,600 new units, equipped with amenities like stainless steel appliances, outdoor spaces, and more. Of the new constructions, high-rises were the most popular type of development.

After RENTCafé analyzed apartment construction data in over 1,300 suburbs across the United States, Yonkers ranked number 36 in the top 50 and was the only New York suburb to make the list.

According to Mayor Mike Spano, who serves as Chairman of the Yonkers IDA Board, “Despite the effects of a global pandemic, Yonkers pledged to move forward, and the results speak for themselves. We are not only ‘back to business’ but growing stronger and better than before.”
