Wine Room or Cellar

Sylvain Côté: Absolute Green Homes

Location: Scarsdale

The homeowners told Sylvain Côté that they wanted a contemporary wine cellar. Inspired by the octagon shape of the existing concrete foundation walls, Côté created a brand-new wine cellar where there was just storage before. It holds 240 bottles on stainless-steel racks by Vin de Garde but can informally hold up to two dozen cases, bringing storage to nearly 500 bottles.

This space came with several challenges, as it was part of a larger basement remodel. A new turret in the front of the house was constructed with a curved staircase leading down to the wine room corridor. Once in the corridor, guests travel down three existing risers to what is now a wine-tasting room. Each shelf is an oak board with wedge-shaped spacers for wine bottles to rest on. The wine area is lined with stone or stucco and has antique brick floors. All cabinets and shelves are made from quarter-sawn white oak, and 2¼-inch-think oak doors hang by large iron strap hinges. The wine-tasting room and cellar are separate from each other, so the homeowners can entertain family and friends outside of the chilled area. Murphy Brothers was the contractor.
