This Westport Home Leans Into Organic Design and Natural Light

Designer Kylie Bass combines neutral tones and natural textures to make this sleek, modern home warm and welcoming.

New York City designer Kylie K. Bass of KKB Interiors didn’t let the modern architecture of this Westport home dictate a stark design—far from it. Instead, she was inspired by the clean lines, organic shapes, and natural light and materials to create a warm, contemporary palette and vibe perfect for a young family.

According to Bass, the home was built specifically to maximize light and create a seamless connection between indoors and out. “The goal was to emphasize the beautiful greenery outside and to bring a sense of calm,” she says. The result is a beautifully layered yet highly livable environment.

The home’s outsized windows create an instant focal point and influenced the overall color palette and selection of materials. “We leaned into natural textures, including a variety of warm woods, tactile stone, and soft textiles to complement the openness and ground the space,” Bass explains.

Another key consideration was that the owners love to entertain and wanted a home that was functional in that regard, airy and inviting and able to easily transition between the usual day-to-day and special occasions. To achieve this, the house seamlessly opens to the outdoors with sliding glass doors to access the covered seating area and pool. “This home was designed to blur the lines between inside and out,” says Bass. “The oversized windows frame the landscaping, allowing the beautiful views to become part of the interior aesthetic.”

Warm elements were woven throughout the rooms with thoughtfully chosen textures, finishes, and furnishings that feel timeless and play up the natural light. Combining concrete and wood is a Bass trade secret that ensures durability while keeping things visually dynamic. The living room furnishings have clean lines yet are soft to the touch and easy on the eyes, with neutral upholstery and layered textures. “For functionality, especially in a house with young children, we were intentional about avoiding any sharp corners,” Bass adds. “Everything has smooth, rounded edges, which makes the spaces not only safer but also visually soothing.” The Bradley coffee table is a striking yet practical mix of wood and concrete, making it both durable and sculptural.

“I believe that a home should be both beautiful and functional, with layers that tell a story over time.”

In the kitchen, functionality was paramount. “We selected a mix of natural stone and wood tones, tying in subtle reeded details that carry through to the bar area,” says Bass. Textural details, like the reeded kitchen island and bar, work to add interest without feeling trendy.”

Light fixtures play an important role in helping to define spaces. “We chose sculptural pieces that add warmth and dimension,” says Bass, who focused on stellar craftsmanship. When she couldn’t source precisely what she had in mind, she commissioned custom-made pieces—including the builtins and a comfortable sofa, all of which were tailored specifically to the home’s scale and style. In the primary bedroom, Bass curated a warm mix of neutrals, soft textiles, and lighting that somehow feels both grand and intimate. Every design decision needed to be both durable and adaptable since the family will evolve as the kids grow up. “One of my favorite elements here is how the spaces feel fun yet timeless. Nothing is overly themed or fleeting,” says Bass. “I believe that a home should be both beautiful and functional, with layers that tell a story over time.”
