This West Harrison Remodel Is a Dream for Entertaining

In time for the holidays, draw inspiration from this kitchen, dining, and living room trio, perfect for hosting.

This remodel project in West Harrison included a full gut renovation for the kitchen, a reimagining of the dining room, living room, family room, breakfast nook, and foyer for a family of four. “When we started the project, our clients were initially reluctant to perform any sort of structural revisions (like knocking down and moving existing walls),” says designer Sasha Drozdetski of Sasha Marie Interiors. “While we were able to suggest several solutions within the existing layout, we ultimately asked the clients to trust us, and were able to show how moving a few walls would manifest the potential of the space. And in the sliding glass doors and archway, this became a showstopper entertainment space.”

The main goal was to create a space that was amenable to hosting while also keeping the open flow of the space. “In order to achieve the desired flow, we removed the wall between the existing kitchen, dining room, and living room, and then moved the kitchen to the end of the house to incorporate a larger island and wall pantry,” says Drozdetski. She also created a focal point with the addition of sliding glass doors leading to the new dining room and a custom archway into the new living room.

The design aesthetic is clean with modern lines with a touch of industrial elements. “At the same time, we wanted to ensure that the home remained a welcoming living space for the family’s children and guests,” says Drozdetski.

The designer says spaces such as dining rooms and living rooms should be flexible and adaptable. “Dining and living rooms need to be places where you can eat dinner with your family one day, then play a board game, host guests, attend to a business call, or meet clients, the next day,” she says. “Our goal is reimagining how we spend time with friends and family in our homes; our living spaces need to wear many different hats, and part of my job is to make sure all those hats fit.”

The glass doors are another element that allows the space to be connected, but also divided. “The glass sliding doors present a conceptual counterbalance to the archway while allowing flexibility of an open floor plan between the kitchen and the entertaining spaces,” she says.
