Coral Sea Pools transforms a West Harrison backyard into an outdoor sanctuary with a pool design inspired by nature.
A deviation from the customary pool design, this aquatic oasis, with its impressive rock formation, allows for a feeling of being integrated with nature. Anthony Torchia of Coral Sea Pools explains the retreat’s look was inspired by the environment itself: A large rock existed in the middle of the West Harrison backyard. Instead of chopping it out and installing a traditional rectangular pool, the homeowner and Torchia decided to retain it and ingeniously fashion a seasonal sanctuary wholly incorporated into its surroundings.
“The inspiration was to use the natural cropping of the rock to build a pool around it and use the rock as a background for the free-form pool,” Torchia says. “The pool wrapped around the rock, which we created the grotto and waterfall out of.” The area is partly natural outcrop; the rest is handpicked stone.
The 800-square-foot pool, adjacent to the 64-square-foot spa, has a Blue Opal by River Rok finish and Aquabella pool tile. The Cascade stone deck, with bluestone coping, is balanced by the pops of greenery in the landscaping.

The sleek lounge chairs and end table already owned by the homeowner lay within the pool itself and provide a relaxing area to lounge while enjoying a scenic view. The homeowners now enjoy the alfresco space during multiple seasons, with the pair of Bobe fire bowls as a welcome addition.
