Design Inspiration: “The overall design tone for this project was pulled from the colors and textures found along the Pacific Coast/San Francisco Bay Area but translating them into a New York lifestyle,” says designer Alexandra Amirian. “I wanted to create a space that felt simultaneously grand and cozy, which we achieved by playing with the scale of the shelving, and the symmetrical furniture layout, which adds a calming presence to the space.”
Primary Use: Reading and games
Favorite Part: “I’m most proud of how we handled the bookshelves,” says Amirian. “They were a custom design that had to incorporate form and function. It was a really fun yet challenging task to create wraparound, floor-to-ceiling shelving that felt light and spacious within the room, housed all the books needed, and also created movement that encouraged your eye to travel from one wall to the next.”

Color Palette: “Deep, dusty teals were applied in a high-gloss paint to all of the moldings and built-ins. This color is echoed in the custom area rug and ottoman that is centered in the room, and the dark-leather chairs. The walls were kept white to highlight the book covers, which we kept front-facing.”
Functional and Fabulous: “This room specifically needed to hit a few important notes for my clients to best utilize it; top priority being comfort and accessibility,” says Amirian. “Every library needs comfortable seating, plentiful book storage, and, most importantly, an environment where you can relax and escape!”
