A plush sofa or snuggly oversize chair is likely your go-to spot for reading bedtime stories, watching family movies, or curling up with a furry friend. Unfortunately, many of those beloved activities come with messy components: kids, snacks, and hairy pets. The solution? Stylish upholstery that can withstand wear and tear.
“You no longer need to stay away from certain fabrics like linen and wool, which were once hard to care for,” says Simon Cohen, owner of Simon Cohen Interiors in Chappaqua. “There are now blended fabrics that I use to give clients any look and feel they want without the stress of something that can be easily damaged or ruined.” Here are four that Cohen recommends:
When looking for upholstery options, keep an eye out for a durability rating on the tag. Most manufacturers use the Wyzenbeek abrasion test to convey how strong a particular fabric is. A rating of 15,000 is typically suitable for a low-traffic area, but wouldn’t be the best choice for someone with kids or pets. Cohen recommends families look for options with a rating of 50,000 and above, which the options on this page have.
