This 1994 10-room Colonial is brimming with one fabulous feature after another beginning with its marble, pillared entryway and including a living room with a wet bar; oversized gourmet kitchen with window-lined, sun-drenched breakfast nook; and master bedroom suite with a fireplace, sitting room, and master marble spa bathroom—all set on more than four landscaped acres. “Not only is this a gorgeous house, it’s a real get-away,” notes listing agent Dominic Benincasa. “When you’re there, you don’t want to leave. The 1,500-square-foot master bedroom offers great views in all seasons of both the infinity pool and the private lake that has a shared ownership by the few surrounding properties, including this one. In fact, when you’re in the infinity pool, the vanishing edge makes it feel like you’re also in the lake.” There’s no basement in this palatial Colonial, but with 6,000 square feet of living space, you may not even notice. Tom Cruise Cruises for a Cottage (of Sorts)
Where does a celebrity go for a private, secluded retreat when the price isn’t priority number one? Where else but the tony towns of Westchester, Rockland, and Fairfield counties that are brimming with luxury listings? And when that celebrity happens to be Tom Cruise, it inspires boundless speculation about where he may end up finding his post-divorce discreet hideaway for spending time with daughter Suri. Rumor has it that possible locations being explored span from Bedford to Darien, Connecticut, including the Bedford Hills compound with the $30 million price tag featured last month in this space. According to a recent report by the New York Daily News, Cruise has checked out the Old Mill Farm estate in Greenwich, formerly owned by Mel Gibson. Considering the expanse of the 75-acre estate, it might be safe to assume that lots of space is a requirement. Other essential criteria reported by the Daily News: paparazzi-free space, gated property, and off the beaten path. Who knows? If the right property fills the bill, Cruise could become Westchester’s latest celebrity neighbor.

The White Garden (199 Elmwood Rd, Lewisboro): A native oak–hickory forest provides the perfect setting for the Greek Revival–style house with gardens designed by Patrick Chassé. The classically inspired gardens nearest the house include a nymphaeum, pergola garden, labyrinth, and theater court, while additional hidden gardens feature a perennial ellipse, an annuals garden, a conservatory “jungle” garden, and an Asian-inspired moss garden. Other tour treats: water features, sculptures, native plantings, woodland walking paths, several glass houses, and a state-of-the-art greenhouse. Head gardener Eric Schmidt, responsible for the property’s rich garden plantings, will be on hand to answer questions.

1 pm to 6 pm
Dick Button—Ice Pond Farm (North Salem)
Ice Pond Farm is known as much for its topography as its gardens. It features a valley with an ice pond, rolling stone wall, an icehouse, smokehouse, spring house, and an outhouse with a view. Perennial borders, a bocce court, a mini-orchard, gazebo, wildflower walk, and stone bridge round out the setting. In the works are two new structures and a few upgrades—a tower, a new and improved vegetable garden, interesting border plantings, a new orangery, and a more developed hillside woodland garden.
Tours are $5 per garden. For more information, call (845) 424-6500 or visit www.gardenconservancy.org/opendays.
