The Project
This pool cabana in Greenwich includes a full kitchen, with grill and custom hood, dishwasher, undercounter ice maker, and beverage refrigerator; a bathroom and changing area featuring a washer and dryer; and a large, outdoor big-screen TV.
Gas-fired overhead heating elements provide perfect outdoor entertaining opportunities. The dining table was custom-made in Bali and serves as a focal point for the seating area, adjacent to the gas-fired linear fireplace.

Game, Set, Match
This outdoor oasis all started with a tennis court. “The client is an avid tennis player who wanted an area that served a variety of functions, including being a space where you can watch a tennis match, entertain guests, host a pool party, and relax in the shade,” says Jason Landau of Amazing Spaces LLC.
International Design Inspiration
The homeowner was inspired by a recent trip to Bali, so the architecture was kept very simple. The buildings are often raised a few steps above the ground, with a columned front porch and a single room beyond. The architect played with various designs involving simple, open pavilions, and the landscape architect suggested positioning the new building in the narrow space between the existing kidney-shaped pool and new tennis court.
In Perfect Harmony
The new building needed to harmonize with the existing traditional Colonial architecture of the main house while incorporating the spatial organization common to Bali. Traditional clapboard siding, wood roofing, and classical columns were used to maintain cohesion between structures on the property. However, once you enter under the roof of the new building, the exotic references are more direct.
One Favorite Part
“The round, oversized hanging lounge bed that is suspended from the ceiling is a fun element,” says William D. Earls, AIA, PC. “We made sure there was a steel beam concealed right there in the ceiling so that it can support just about anything. It’s like a giant floating bed, and it’s so relaxing!”
