Dobbs Ferry-based Andrea Perrone of Adonia Floral Design shares tips on how to create an eye-catching arrangement.
Approximately two decades ago, Andrea Perrone spontaneously signed up for a floral design class at her neighborhood flower shop. “During the workshop, I was immediately transported back to my memories of making little bouquets of humble flowers for my mom and favorite teachers. We had a gorgeous forsythia shrub and magnolia tree in front of my childhood home that exploded each spring with the prettiest of flowers. I always admired their beauty and have had a connection with flowers from a young age.”
Perrone has since created her own floral company, Adonia Floral Design, specializing in natural, unstructured, spontaneous, and garden-inspired bouquets.
“I never imagined a career in floristry,” she admits, “but the feeling of excitement and nostalgia to create something with my hands never left me.”
On creating a beautiful, seasonal arrangement, Perrone says, “The summer season brings an abundance of blooms, so creating a pretty arrangement in a pinch is effortless.”
Here are some pro tips from Perrone for creating long-lasting summer blooms:
- Keep flowers out of direct sunlight. The heat will cause the stems to wilt.
- Place blooms away from fruit; ethylene gases released from the fruit will cause the flowers to decay.
- In the evening, put your flowers to rest in the coolest part of your home.
- Recycle an empty spray bottle by thoroughly washing it and refilling it with clean water. Lightly mist your flowers once a day or when the weather is particularly hot. Flowers love to stay hydrated.
