Love summertime in Westchester County? Embrace the blue skies and sunshine all season long by infusing your home with summery decor. To help, we touched base with designers around the 914 for their advice on how to make your home feel like summer is in full force no matter what time of year it is.
“With warmer weather here, I love to add fresh flowers throughout my house. Peonies, in particular, always make me think of late spring/summer and bring in the best colors. I also switch out my candles to lighter scents, like ocean mist, sea salt, and washed linen.”
—Barrett Oswald, Barrett Oswald Designs
“I’m a huge plant lover and like to incorporate them into my designs along with my own home wherever possible. I always use a mix of real and faux plants in varying heights and sizes. Nothing says summer like the hydrangea flower — if you have them in your garden, use cut stems to create stunning indoor displays. A small vase with them always looks pretty on a nightstand. Something as simple as a eucalyptus stem in a glass vase makes a great centerpiece for a dinner party, and hurricane lamps and string party lights are perfect companions to alfresco dining on a warm summer evening.”
—Jennifer McCabe, Duck Egg Blue
“The perfect summer refresh is all about creating a light, fresh, airy, and streamlined feel with decor. Less is more. Swap out wool throws for cotton. A fresh welcome mat. Plant tropical plants in fun planters for a warm welcome.”

“I love changing out pillows, decorating with flowers, and setting up my outdoor spaces with ‘pretty’ citronella candles and hurricanes. They not only create a mood, but also keep the bugs away. Outdoor rugs are a must for me to add softness under bare feet and to create cozy spots for kids to play and pups to curl up. My patio is always stocked with fluffy pool towels, and I like when they are all the same style and coordinate with the decor. Dining alfresco with grilled food and fun cocktails is also my favorite way to entertain! My favorite summer cocktails are margaritas and Brazilian caipirinhas, and “rosé all day” is a staple in my home! Finally, for sun-sensitive folks like myself, an asymmetrical umbrella to keep over the pool is a key for longer enjoyment in the water.”
—Lina Galvão, Curated Nest
“I am passionate about lighting and its impact on any space. In the summer, I love to add tea-light candles everywhere and use our outdoor lanterns inside to create the perfect summer mood.”
—Kim Mitchell, KAM Design
“Nothing says warm weather like decorating with flowers and plants. One of our favorite things to do in summer months is to purchase olive and lemon trees from local nurseries. They are a great way to add a sense of the outdoors into your home.”
