Spring Cleaning 101: How to Spruce up Your Westchester Home

Muffetta Krueger, of Muffetta's Domestic Assistants in Orange and Westchester counties, shares how and why to tackle spring cleaning.

Ah, spring cleaning: the time to clean everything you would not normally clean on a regular basis. While the process may seem intimidating at first, these tips will help you to polish and shine your home into tip-top shape in no time.

Move It

“Move all of the furniture out of the way and focus on the things that get overlooked because you’re not able to get to them or they’re in a corner,” says Muffetta Krueger, owner of Muffetta’s Domestic Assistants, which serves Westchester and Orange counties. This includes baseboards, vents, fans, ceilings, and walls. “Wipe areas that may have spots or little smudge marks,” she adds.

Clean the Fabric and Furniture

Drapes, windows, rugs, and furniture should also be included in your list. “Vacuum the top of drapes to rid them of dust; if vents are large, vacuum those as well and use a damp cloth to clean furniture. If you have nice wood furniture, use oil or give it a wax. Call in a cleaning service for your rugs and upholstered furniture. Give everything a good cleaning,” says Krueger.

Deter Dust

For dust, Krueger says her team loves using microfiber rags and dusters because they hold the dust in. Some furnishings can be cleaned using soap and water, she says, but make sure to read the care instructions for pieces before you tackle them.

Empty It Out

This is also a great time to empty out your closets, cabinets, and drawers in the kitchen, bathroom, and around the house. “Empty them out, wipe them down, and get rid of things you don’t need or haven’t used in the past year. It’s time to declutter,” says Krueger.

Although Krueger says you can deep clean twice a year, she believes most homeowners focus on the spring because it feels fresh. “You can open the windows and let the fresh air in — the spring just feels different,” she explains. “It feels lighter to do all of this. Not only is it important for your home, but it is also important for your mental state.”
