This Somers Home Redesign Infuses Comfort and Functionality Into the Space

See how designers Monique Cahill and Jessica Quezada— the dynamic duo behind JM Foundarie in Greenwich— added style and coziness to a Somers Colonial.

Comfort, classic touches, and plenty of storage were key for a Somers couple who called in JM Foundarie to reimagine their house. The project included creating a new floor plan for the first and second floors, a remodel of the kitchen and bathrooms, and adding millwork throughout, including in the mudroom and pantry.

“The family spends a lot of time at home together and love to entertain,” says Cahill. “They embrace everyday living and did not want any space to feel too formal. We intentionally chose finishes, textures, and details that felt approachable and comfortable while keeping the design intent in mind.”

The kitchen ended up being the designers’ favorite new room. “It’s a large gathering space for their family and friends. Design-wise there was no detail that wasn’t considered—it’s an entertainer’s dream!” says Quezada.

The dream features two islands plus an informal dining area with custom wood-mitered waterfall detail. Maximum storage was a must, so every square inch of space was utilized in the design. The eye-catching stovetop hood is clad with gorgeous handmade zellige tiles and anchored by custom sconces from Urban Electric. “The double ovens are fully concealed by custom millwork so [they] can be out of sight when not in use,” says Cahill. “The reclaimed wood beams add bespoke character to a space that before felt like a builder special.”

One of the designers’ favorite elements is the custom marble sink with the unlacquered brass Perrin and Rowe faucet. “[It] looks more beautiful the more it patinas,” adds Cahill.

The formal dining room features custom plaster paired with a stunning Apparatus chandelier. Every room on the main floor also has a special, one-of-a-kind vintage rug.

To warm up the great room with its extremely high ceilings, the designers added custom millwork that was scaled to the space. The great room also sports oversized upholstered seating that beckons the family to gather.

On the second floor, two ensuite bathrooms were added for the couple’s three kids—one in elementary and two in high school. “With their children getting older, it was important for them to have their own spaces and bathrooms,” says Quezada. The daughter’s bathroom boasts a custom steel shower door over a generously sized soaking tub.

The saturated earth tones throughout the home provide a clean, cohesive look.

To maximize every square inch, the designers created nooks out of unused spaces throughout the home resulting in more functional closets, and a more useful pantry and mudroom. “Millwork [and] custom closets were created in each of the kids’ bedrooms to offer unique style and storage solutions,” adds Cahill.

The saturated earth tones throughout the home provide a clean, cohesive look and were inspired by the Calacatta Paonazzo marble that the client fell in love with. The designers were more than happy to follow their client’s lead. “We are drawn to dynamic neutrals and muted jewel tones,” says Cahill.

The JM Foundarie team does not follow trends. “Our goal for every project is for it to feel unique while meeting the clients’ individual needs,” says Cahill. “Ultimately, we want our designs to feel classic, thoughtful, and timeless. We thrive on finding unique vintage elements to incorporate into each of our projects.”

The results of the renovation combine classic looks and textures with a more modern perspective according to Cahill and Quezada. “We also included a lot of vintage elements to add character and create a curated living space. We wanted this project to feel warm and approachable.”
