Winterizing your home can make it warmer in more ways than one. Bronxville-based interior designer Patricia O’Shaughnessy shares helpful decorating tips to keep your home looking and feeling warm and welcoming during a season more often associated with dismal and drab:
Brighten your interior
This is the time to warm and brighten your interiors. As the outdoors become more monochromatic, add color, pattern, and texture to compensate.
Block drafts with window treatments
Window treatments can do double duty—keeping drafts out while also providing decorative accents. O’Shaughnessy rates the options:
Drapes: the most versatile treatment, with the option of including a thermal interlining and any fabric choice to face the room.
Shutters: newly fabricated shutters made of a composite material are lightweight and more effective than wood at blocking out the cold.
Shades: the most affordable choice, when choosing insulating options, such as an inner lining or foil lining.
Make rooms cozy with rugs
Use rugs to make a room cozy. Piling throw and area rugs add warmth during winter and can be picked up and packed away in the summer. Options include colorful, affordable wool hooked and pile rugs.
Warm up bedrooms
Upholstered walls or upholstered headboards are luxury solutions to warm a bedroom. If custom isn’t an option, consider upholstered headboards available by catalog.
