Read This Interior Designer's Tips For Modernizing a Space Using Color

Benjamin Moore has a new product called CENTURY, the first paint with a soft touch matte finish. It comes in a curated palette of 75 pre-mixed colors, each with more depth and richness than other paints.

Recently, BM worked with interior designer Young Huh of Young Huh Interiors to bring a modern flair to a Westchester Home’s traditional design. Here, she offers up her tips for modernizing a space with just color.

Tell us a bit about your overall style and what inspires you when it comes to design.

I like to create a vision of what the homeowners wish their home life to be. Their vision and dreams are the first thing to inspire me. Next I try to tell a story incorporating this and the architecture and [the] feeling of the house. My inspiration also comes from my love of art and artisans, materials, and textures. I love to have patterns and colors giving my space a mix of antique and modern flair.

How did you get involved with this project?

I have known the homeowners for quite some time and this is our third project on their home. They wanted their 1920s home to get a fresh update while respecting the history and bones of their Dutch Colonial house.

What do you love most about CENTURY and how is it different from other paints?

I was really excited to use the CENTURY collection in this project because of the depth and quality of the colors. The rich pigmentation and curation of the colors reflect historic house paints, but perhaps a modern take on those. This aligned with our plan for the house renovation—respecting the history of the home while making it relevant and livable for a modern and active family. The particular colors were chosen because they evoked the mood and feeling the client wanted in each room.

Can you tell us why you chose the colors you did for the rooms featured?

The colors were about supporting and decorating the items that were already in the room and giving them a new presence with color. The study is where the lady of the house spends time and she loved the idea of being enveloped in the BLUE MUSCARI U9. She felt the color was activating, but also deep and thoughtful. The COBALT U8 of her son’s room is a classic true blue but with vibrancy not usually found in paint. VIRIDIAN O6 was a perfect green for her oldest son’s room and paired nicely with the retro posters and masculine vibe of his style.  The teal, LIGHT BERYL P4, room pairs nicely with the pretty furnishings and pink accents while keeping it sophisticated and grounded.

Any favorite hues or color palettes that you’re gravitating towards right now?

I think we are seeing vibrant cobalt blues, rich navy, and yellow of every kind has come back into everyone’s color schemes. It all of a sudden feels new in saturated marigold hues.
