A true team endeavor for Bilotta Kitchens and the client, the design of this traditional kitchen in Pound Ridge marries form and function.
When Randy O’Kane of Bilotta Kitchens was tasked with designing a Pound Ridge kitchen, she had the good fortune of working with a client who was both interested in the design process and wanting to be a part of the planning. “Some clients have such great taste that it’s easy to help create the kitchen of their dreams. My client in this case had such passion for the design of her own kitchen that it made it a fun, collaborative experience,” says O’Kane.
O’Kane explains that the homeowner “put her heart and soul into making sure every detail was exactly the way she wanted.” To tie the kitchen in with the rest of the home, they selected a one-inch-thick custom door (from Bilotta’s private custom-cabinet collection) that was traditionally styled, to match the details of the adjacent rooms, and a cabinet color from Farrow & Ball, Lamp Room Gray, to blend with the colors in the adjoining rooms.
An oversized stone Francois & Co. Toulouse shelf with a concave stack hood was selected by the homeowner from a dealer in London (who shipped it overseas by boat). Mother-of-pearl knobs from Anthropologie were chosen for specific cabinets, creating a grand effect. To mirror the standout knobs, naturally pearlescent clay tile, quartzite countertops, and lanterns above the island were chosen; the lanterns replicate the movement of the gold pattern in the knobs.
O’Kane says: “The client opted to turn the tile on the diagonal, as it felt more fluid and in keeping with the movement in the knobs and lanterns. The stone hood, tile, and quartzite sample coordinated perfectly. The space has the perfect complement of accessories for making it not just visually appealing but also a baker’s dream, with a lift-up for a frequently used mixer. There’s a built-in paper-towel holder and even a secret pantry with matching cabinetry hidden in the corner.”
For this project, the homeowner and O’Kane worked with Rob Norr of Nordic Construction and Brad Demotte of DeMotte Architects. The collaborative effort yielded a highly functional yet spectacular space.
