Circulation + Style + Good Appliances = The Perfect Bar
During the upcoming holidays, many of us will be hosting families and friends, and the best way to kick off a great party is around a bar for a cocktail or mocktail. But how do you design and put together the makings of a stylish yet functional bar? Enter Studio Dearborn’s kitchen designer Sarah Robertson, who is sharing her tips for mixing one up.
“It’s not very sexy, but circulation is key,” says Robertson. “A bar needs to have enough room around it that your guests can get a drink without getting trapped there. If you entertain a lot, rethink putting your bar in a corner, and find a place that’s more central.”
A bit of style goes a long way too, so have fun with your design choices. “I love glass doors with some unexpected material like tile, wallpaper, or metal at the back of the bar cabinets,” says Robertson. “It’s a special detail that sets off your barware and creates a ‘look at me’ moment.”
Robertson advises not going cheap on appliances; if you do, you will “regret it later,” she says. “The bar is a special little jewel in your home and a place to create a strong visual moment, so reusing the wine refrigerator from the basement is a lost opportunity!”
