When Jessica Zavaglia of Zavaglia and Associates first visited this property, she knew that the vast outdoor space had promise, even though it needed a total overhaul. “It was essentially a large, green box,” says Zavaglia. “The one redeeming feature—a narrow, awkward entertaining space—barely accommodated a dining table, which was a challenge for this young family of five who love to spend lots of time together outside.”
The family, who recently moved from New York City to Scarsdale, wanted to transform the backyard into a space where they could entertain guests and relax. The design team was tasked with creating a multifunctional area for a variety of activities, including watching football by a fire, listening to music, hosting outdoor meals, and spending quality time together—and they wanted to enjoy it year-round.
The stylish new space was outfitted with built-in heaters, a fireplace, and integrated outdoor WiFi and speakers. To make the area feel grounded and cohesive, Zavaglia added a custom pergola with carefully designed pillars. The “living” area is surrounded by thoughtful landscaping, which offers seasonal interest throughout the year. “The goal was to create a beautiful backdrop that provided seclusion without feeling closed off,” says Zavaglia. “Each plant was chosen for its ability to thrive, creating a harmonious balance of aesthetics and functionality.”
Since the homeowners wanted the space to be as beautiful during the evening as it is during the day, proper lighting was essential. Zavaglia incorporated ambient, task, and accent lighting that “highlight key features and enhance the overall mood of the space,” she explains.
The family is thrilled with the results and they enjoy the yard just as Zavaglia imagined. “The best moments are when the clients send pictures of their family using the space,” she says, “and I can see that they are truly making memories that will last for years to come.”
