Get Inspired by 20 Slides in 20 Seconds
Whether you’re a seasoned architect, architect wanna-be, or an ardent fan of great architecture and design, you’re in for a treat at PechaKucha Night, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects Westchester Hudson Valley chapter (AIAWHV), Carol Kurth Architecture PC, and Purchase Park 2 Fly on Thursday, May 10, from 6 to 9 pm at Elements Food & Spirits (161 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains). Part inspiration, part entertainment, PechaKucha (20 Slides / 20 Seconds) was launched in Tokyo in 2003 for people to meet, network, and show their work and has gone worldwide. For participants and observers alike, the AIAWHV promises a night of fun presentations covering a wide range of topics. Each presenter must rise to the challenge of pairing words and images in six minutes and 40 seconds—a format designed to keep presentations concise and moving quickly. The admission fee ($20 or $10 for AIA or associate AIA members respectively; $30 for non-members) includes the first drink and appetizers. Celebrate the arrival of spring planting season at this year’s Teatown Plant Sale on Friday, May 11, 4 to 7 pm, and Saturday, May 12, 9 am to 2 pm at Teatown Lake Reservation (1600 Spring Valley Rd, Ossining). The two-day event opens with the Friday “first pick” sale—your chance to get an early pick of your favorite plants from a rich array of annuals, native wildflowers, perennials, hanging baskets, vegetables, and herbs. Admission is $10 for the Friday night first pick sale and free for the Saturday plant sale. As a bonus, participants also are invited to tour Wildflower Island—a two-acre sanctuary of more than 230 native and endangered wildflower species—on Saturday from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Head to the Greenburgh Nature Center (99 Dromore Rd, off Central Park Ave, Scarsdale) for the remaining two sessions of the three-part Nature Friendly Garden Series with native plant expert Kim Eierman. On Saturday, May 12, from 10 to 11:30 am, learn how to attract the “good bugs” to your yard by planting the right mix of native plants and on Saturday, June 16, from 10 to 11:30 am, learn how to attract and support butterflies, skippers, and moths by planting host plants. An assortment of plants discussed will be available for purchase after each session. Enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required online.
