New Year, New Home

Five local designers share how they’re moving into 2017.

How Do You Transition Your Home for the New Year?

“The New Year is a great time to sort through my kitchen drawers. Discarding all the extra chopsticks (and soy sauce packets) that have accumulated in the cutlery drawer, matching all the plasticware lids and bottoms, and reorganizing the junk drawer are simple tasks that start the New Year off right.”
—Jennifer W. Howard of JWH Design & Cabinetry

“My favorite way to ring in the New Year is by hosting a cozy and intimate celebration with my husband and a few of our friends. I love adding a little extra sparkle into our home on that day. Tiny white lights canopy our doorways; twinkling candles, the pop of Champagne, and sparklers ring in the stroke of midnight!”
—Alexandra Amirian, Founder of M&P Design Group

“The holidays are so intense with decorating and family that we started going to St. John in the US Virgin Islands to welcome the New Year. I do my best to make sure all clients are taken care of by the third week in December. I clean my office, celebrate with friends and family, and hit the beach! I take my design inspiration from nature, so it is a complete pleasure to relieve the New Year’s pressure and spend it with my kids and husband on a stunning island, soaking up the colors. I feel I come back to work with a refreshed palette.”
—Melissa Adams Gruber of Adams Interior Design

“To welcome in the New Year, I refresh my home’s look and my outlook by switching out throw pillows. It’s an easy, inexpensive way to make a room feel different. And it gives me a fresh take on a new year.”
—Shannon Murray Petruzello of Shannon Murray Interiors Inc.

“Start the New Year off by making your home more functional, fresh, and organized. This is the perfect time to purge and reorganize!  Some of my favorite easy-to-follow tips are to create charging stations to keep wires and technical gadgets out of the way. Another way to breathe new life into your home is to take everything out of a room and rearrange the furniture and only put back in the items you love. The rest donate or throw away. Purchase new pillows, throws, and lampshades, and never underestimate what new paint can do for a room.”
