Just listed! Historic Home with Storied Past
$7.75 million
Annual property taxes: $95,105
21 Whippoorwill Rd, Armonk
This historic gem that has it all—from luxury to lore—just hit the market! If walls could talk, there would be plenty to tell about this home’s colorful past. Just the list of famous past owners is an impressive who’s who all on its own, starting with the George Hunter Waterbury (of Waterbury, Connecticut, fame), followed by Theodore and Aline Bernstein (he was a Wall Street broker and she wore many hats—writer, award winning set and costume designer, and co-founder of The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, who was romantically linked with the then 19 years-younger writer Thomas Wolfe and said to have been the muse for a character featured in several of his books). Then came New Deal documentary filmmaker Pare Lorenz and wife Elizabeth Meyer Lorentz (scriptwriter, filmmaker, daughter of Washington Post owner Eugene Meyer, and sister of publisher Katharine Graham). Today, the 8,900 square-foot, Cotswold stone mansion on the nearly 13-acre estate is distinguished by treasured architectural details paired with every high-end amenity imaginable. Its unique features run the gamut from a car collector’s garage with an 11-car capacity to a custom high-end Bilotta kitchen to a four-stall barn. “What makes Waterbury Farm so special are all of the lifestyle amenities the estate has to offer in such close proximity to Manhattan,” says listing agent Lisa Koh. “The stone manor house, pool and pool house, horse barn, riding rink, paddocks, second barn for the auto enthusiast, and guest cottage provide a compound-like feeling, much like an estate in Bedford and a rare find in Armonk. Waterbury Farm boasts almost 13 acres of expansive private property and is protected by conservation land and beautiful layered vistas of the Kensico Reservoir. It’s rich in history, in move-in condition, and simply spectacular.” Unique in every way, you won’t find a traditional flow in this antique home.
