Find a Future Heirloom
Looking for a piece of furniture or work of art unlike anything you’ll see in your local furniture retailer or neighbor’s home? Hudson Valley Furniture Makers (HVFM), an association of professional designers/makers dedicated to the production of thoughtfully crafted furniture, is sponsoring an exhibition and sale of outstanding work by 10 of its members. Featured will be handcrafted, one-of-a-kind, and limited-edition studio-made furniture from exotic and domestic woods as well as hand-forged steel. “Evolving from traditions cultivated through centuries of craftsmanship, these local furniture makers offer clients something very special,” says HVFM’s Nicole Carroll, an artist marketing consultant. “Uninterested in mass production, their furniture is made one piece at a time.” From gleaming dining-room tables to sleek armchairs, the work is outstanding (shown here: Rob Hare Chair). The exhibition will be at the Rhinebeck Arts Festival at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds September 26 to 28.

Hip Not to Be Square
If HIPCHIK HOME’s name alone weren’t enough, the logo—a grinning sugar skull with peace-sign eyes—is the tip-off that this is not your staid home gift shop for the twin-set-and-pearls crowd. “It’s fun and funky,” says owner Andrea Rosenberg. “Definitely not formal.” An Armonk resident and fashion-industry vet, Rosenberg previously launched a successful collection of Boho jewelry, HIPCHIK, also sold here. Pop in to pick up a pillow—a big fuzzy one, an edgier one bearing the shop’s signature skull motif, or a whimsical YOLO pillow from New Ro native Alexandra Ferguson; a very cool sorbet-colored Lucite cake cutter and server from Sabre of Paris; a colorful Lucite tray from Alexandra Von Furstenberg; or a frame adorned in anything from elegant mother-of-pearl to earthy twine. Prices range from $70 for paper cocktail napkins to $2,900 for a wall-sized original photograph.

People in Glass Houses
New to the county is this very cool resource center for Bullseye Glass Co. Founded in the ’70s by a trio of artists, Bullseye, whose factory is located in Portland, Oregon, is now one of the most sophisticated manufacturers of colored glass for art and architecture in the world, providing more than 1,000 different products in a complex color palette. This kiln-glass center is a unique hybrid of retailer, school, and gallery, where beginning to professional glass artists can purchase the full line of sheet glass, tools, and other supplies; advance their skill levels through hands-on classwork; and exhibit their work—both functional and purely artistic—or view that of other emerging and established artists, in the showroom’s gallery.
