“A beautiful rug can add color and texture to a room, like a beautiful piece of art. Or, it can help neutralize a busy room,” says Deichmeister. “Like most aspects of design, the choice for a rug should be based on personal taste and can vary in different rooms and homes.” Here are her tips on how to choose the perfect rug for your space.
First Things First
“We suggest selecting a rug first, and then building the room around it. It’s helpful when customers can show us a photo of the room or provide dimensions so that we can help determine the proper size.”
Measuring Up
“The rug size will depend on the size of the room. In general, living and dining rooms can handle more substantial rugs, leaving just a 2- to 3-foot border of floor around it.”
It’s a Material Thing
“For high-traffic areas, wool is the best option in terms of ease-of-cleaning and durability.”
Location, Location, Location
“Furniture placement really varies from room to room. For smaller bedrooms, we typically see the rug at the foot of the bed; however, in larger master bedrooms, you may require two rugs to compensate for the openness.”
Biggest Mistake
“Customers will frequently make the mistake of buying a rug that is too small for the space. A more substantial rug always looks better and more balanced.”
