Designed in 1937 by pioneering architect Verna Cook Salomonsky, this majestic six-bedroom center hall Colonial in The Grange section of Scarsdale features hallmarks of Salomonsky’s signature style—a curved entry hall staircase, bay windows, abundant closet space, large hallways, lots of natural light, and light-colored walls to make the rooms appear even larger. Salomonsky, who in 1936 was the only female member of the Architectural League of New York, also had the distinction of designing the model home for the New York World’s Fair in 1939. “The owners refer to this elegant Colonial as “the little big house,” says listing agent Carolyn Kay. “All of the rooms are a great size, but the home doesn’t feel overwhelming.” Built in 1937, the property now has an updated roof, gas heating system, and central air conditioning. A 1967 addition by the current owners reconfigured what had been four bedrooms and two smaller maid’s rooms into six spacious bedrooms. Other pluses: original artisan craftsmanship, three wood-burning fireplaces, a spacious study with numerous built-ins and picture-window view of landscaped grounds, MacKenzie-Childs powder room, and finished basement with sprawling family room and temperature controlled wine cellar. Tour Exquisite Kitchens

While we’re on the subject of kitchen renovations… there’s another way to get inspired—touring existing fabulous kitchens in spectacular homes. Consider taking a trip across the Tappan Zee for a rare peek into some of Rockland County’s most exquisite architectural gems ranging from the classic (like the kitchen of “Julie and Julia” fame set in a 106-year-old home) to the fun and funky (a 1970s contemporary kitchen with a drop-down rotating TV set) on Saturday, June 9, from 10 am to 4 pm. This annual Rivertown Film fundraiser features houses in a number of picturesque river towns, including Piermont and Nyack with raffles and refreshments along the way. Tour maps and tickets ($35 in advance, $40 day of, and a $5 discount for Rivertown Film members) are available starting at 9:30 am on June 9 at the South Nyack Village Hall (282 S Broadway) and The Outside In gallery in Piermont (249 Ferdon Ave). Sustainable Shelter Sessions

Gerry Angel raised ranch transformation

The 1953 raised ranch of Keller Williams NY Realty eco-broker Gerry Angel continues to transform into a green wonder. The next chance to get an up-close view of the progress will be Wednesday, June 13, from 10 am to 12:30 pm, when Murphy Brothers Contracting (the firm managing the whole-home renovation) hosts two on-site sustainable shelter sessions (light lunch included) targeted to interior designers at 64 Holbrooke Rd in White Plains. In “Controlling LEDs to Meet Customer Expectations” Jeff Cohen, light control specialist with Yusen Associates, Inc., will cover everything you need to know about energy efficient LED lighting before your clients ask. “Rainwater 101,” led by Richard Heller, founder and CEO of Greener by Design, a sustainable landscape design company, provides an introduction to rainwater harvesting and sustainable landscaping. Following each presentation, participants will have a chance to take a self-guided tour of the LEED for Homes project in progress and meet some of the trades people involved, including architect Christina Griffin; Paul Auerbach of Total Green (geothermal heating and air conditioning); Chris Puleo of GreenStar (high efficiency insulation methods); Phil Christon of PNC Electric (energy efficient lighting design); Ken McCabe of VFR Contracting (water conserving plumbing methods); and Frank Kelly of Authentic Window Design (energy saving windows and doors). For more information or to reserve a seat, call (914) 777-5777 or e-mail

Bloomberg expands Westchester holdings

Google aerial view

The New York Times reports that New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has expanded his Westchester properties to a total of three (including one in Armonk) with last year’s purchase of the 33-acre property at 39 Hilltop Dr in North Salem, adjacent to the 20-acre estate he purchased in 2001 for daughter Georgina. The property, purchased in June 2011 for $4.55 million (confirmed by public records), includes a 4,400-square-foot contemporary home, a barn, three-car garage, separate cottage, and a horse-riding rink. And, if you’re counting, records show this brings Bloomberg’s real estate holdings to 11 worldwide.
