This bright and bubbly girls’ bedroom in Rye was crafted for a young lady who adores pink. While she could be described as a girly girl, we chose to stretch that concept to be both bold and feminine while not frilly. Blending placid grays and calming art into the mix resulted in a room boasting equal parts fun and sophistication. Hot-pink wallpaper serves as an accent on the bed wall, which nicely contrasts with the four-poster bed’s lime-green fabric. Chic white-lacquer nightstands with oversize brass pulls flank the bed, topped by gray stacked lamps that echo a velvet-gray lounging sofa nearby. At the other end of the room sits a brass vanity complemented by a hot-pink velvet stool. Art, including a whimsical image of a bunny with eyeglasses and a cassette tape that reads “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” completes the look.

The owners of this Larchmont dining room were looking for a space that was formal enough to entertain company but not too stuffy or serious. The coral geometric wallpaper serves as the foundation of the room, which was grounded by a vintage Oushak rug in shades of soft blues and complementary pinks. Pops of attractive color were infused into the space via turquoise ceramic lamps set off by a crisp, white sideboard. The cheerful space was then completed with cream herringbone upholstered chairs that elevate the room while tying its varied colors together.

As the client’s favorite color is turquoise, the designer used a soothing, “grayed-down” version of the hue to offset the busy activity from young children and household pets that this living room experiences. A trio of Dora Samosi photographs was sourced to tie into the striped, multihued Missoni carpet. The artwork, in turn, relates to the “cloudy” textured performance velvet on the sofa, appropriate for the fast-paced lifestyle of this New Rochelle family.

Two current design trends — wallpaper murals and cerused oak — were used to help transform a formerly bland Larchmont dining room into a beautiful one. The Phillip Jeffries grasscloth mural’s soft, cloudlike imagery adds scale and drama without being overpowering. Meanwhile, the dining table of cerused white oak — a finishing technique that showcases the beauty of the wood grain without damaging the wood itself — adds both warmth and a distinct rustic elegance that makes the space feel elevated yet not too formal.

This project was about outside-the-box thinking and using reclaimed wood in new and interesting ways. Traditionally seen in the form of ceiling beams, reclaimed wood is deftly utilized in this newly renovated kitchen as a rustic element to frame the trimmed opening that connects the kitchen to the adjoining breakfast nook and as an accent detail on the range hood. This fresh take complements the furnishings and decor, adding character to the neutral palette of this Pound Ridge space. The project’s inspiration was the clients’ desire to add unique details that created warmth.

This Arts and Crafts-style home in Larchmont was part of a kitchen/dining-room gut reno. Previously a nook that had housed a cabinet and floating shelves, the space was intended for remote studying and working. The renovated space features a freshly designed area to serve the same function, with a more elevated aesthetic. As the clients were open to pattern, color, and fun concepts, the designer added wallpaper with black splatter, a small plant, and convenient storage. The desk and bench was oriented sideways, rather than the typical desk that faces a wall. It is a perfect spot for a laptop and a coffee, ideal for remote learning and working.

The clients were “board” of the white walls on the third floor of their Rye home, where their son, an avid skier, had recently relocated. The space was transformed into a magical winter wonderland, thanks to a custom mural that depicts majestic snowcapped mountains, bright-blue skies, and colorful skis and poles. The graphic of the skier’s paradise is a mirror image (the mountains and skis flank both ends of the hallway) that wraps around the hallways between the son’s bedroom, game room, and bathroom, elevating the area to new heights.

The kitchen in this 1897 Scarsdale home was a gut renovation within an existing addition; it makes excellent use of the space while ticking all the boxes on the young family’s wish list, including upper cabinets and plenty of seating at both a dramatic, deep, marine-blue island and a roomy banquette. Striking decorative features from Circa Lighting and Hudson Valley Lighting offer improved illumination. Sleek solar shades from The Shade Store and outdoor-grade fabric cushions round out the bright, comfortable, and family-friendly space.

This refined playroom is the mecca for creative Larchmont littles. The space’s former life — as a home office — was maintained with a wall-to-wall desk suited for two, complete with plenty of drawers to conceal mess. Four mint-colored chairs and a white table in the center of the room provide a less structured environment, while an inviting corner with a sitting area (that matches the cheery window treatments) serves as a cozy, well-lit reading nook or the main stage of a happening jam session.

Smart Playrooms
The designers goal was to create a space that spoke to each of the client’s three kids so that each felt the space was designed specifically for them. The family had just moved to Scarsdale and had a large basement. Filled with adventure, this space is more like a stylish obstacle course with a gymnastic area that includes a trapeze, pegboard, mats, and gymnastic rings. The physical play area boasts a rock wall, foam pit, and monkey bars; a sports court includes a basketball zone with wall pads; and the pretend play area features a custom playhouse, with a mailbox, kitchen set, market counter, wallpaper, and storage. The designer worked hard to create a space that fostered family and sibling time. Considering the result, it’s safe to say the mission was a success.

This fun yet sophisticated bedroom for a Rye boy fascinated by all things aviation passes with flying colors. Anchored by an oversize world-map mural in blues and greens, it features a statement bed of leather, fabric, and iron on a blue-wool rug accented with a drum shade and swing-arm pendant reading lights, both in blue. A comfy chair in a saturated green hue placed beneath an aviation-themed Plexiglas art piece makes the perfect spot for reading up on future destinations.

Vintage and antique furniture already owned by the client were repurposed for this space. The soft color palette is inviting, as are the fireplace and cozy window seat. Statement lighting, textiles, and the furnishings add a contemporary feel. Overall, the designer wanted to keep the charm and integrity of this home as they brought it back to life.

Warm hues are found in the form of furnishings and decor; custom walnut cabinetry is complemented by a live-edge table made from a thick walnut slab, along with the seating for 10. Designer Debra Kling, known for her propensity to incorporate bold, vibrant colors, added in the client’s favorite color, turquoise, with wallpaper, an inviting window seat, and a leather-trimmed indoor/outdoor sisal carpet. A custom built-in bar, with antique-mirror mosaic by First Class Woodworking, anchors the room and serves as an entertaining area for daytime celebrations or an intimate evening for two. The space is elevated to new heights with dazzling handblown lighting that adds drama.

The oversize marble tile flooring is simple, with a rotated design and an outline of a black-granite border and small, angled inserts for interest.

The entryway of this classic Georgian home in Scarsdale welcomes visitors while setting the tone for the home’s overall design. The center-piece of the space is a handsome, Asian-inspired, acid-etched, metal-and-wood table with chinoiserie-like engraving; it is topped with a white, organically shaped ceramic bowl. Above, the soft, white globes of the midcentury-modern lighting fixture echo the curves of the circular stairway. Elsewhere, a smooth midcentury burled-wood table is juxtaposed with an intricately etched mirror of Murano Venetian glass imported from Italy.

The color palette of warm, golden tones and soft-pink/ coral for the furnishings and artwork on the walls originated from the client’s inspiration by a desert sunset. The new design features family-friendly and ethically sourced materials, more color, and elements of African-inspired prints. A dedicated kids’ area, with concealed storage and comfortable seating for at least 10 people, completes the luxurious yet livable approach to the space.

As part of an open floor plan that incorporates multiple rooms (including the kitchen, dining area, and living room), this space is light-filled and airy. The design utilizes influences of Scandinavian and midcentury-modern design mixed with California coastal style. The neutral color palette is complemented by warm wood tones — reclaimed beams were installed perpendicular to the room to create architectural interest and designate the seating area. A large, gray sectional sits atop a greige-striated loop-and-pile-cut wool rug. A black-leather-and-wood lounge chair serves as additional seating, as do kid-friendly soft raffia and faux-leather round ottomans. For toy storage, a natural, whitewashed and black wood cabinet is utilized. The client’s Peter Lik photography is a focal point.

The suite’s vast open spaces include high ceilings and oversize windows featuring motorized window treatments, with sheer and blackout options: The space was created for two busy surgeons who work long shifts. The muted gray hues allow for a simplistic yet elegant touch. Heated tiles in the bathroom add an extra level of comfort to the true oasis.

The designer was entrusted to create a warm and inviting master suite for this home in Ossining. The project was a major overhaul: walls were removed, the space was reconfigured, and the entranceway was changed to create a cohesive suite. For symmetry, the bed was placed between two windows. Hanging pendants were included for a contemporary feel, while a grasscloth accent wall and wood mantle add interest. The dark barn door between the bedroom and bathroom provides a rustic element. A massive walk-in closet is a lavish component of the suite, complete with a seating area. The modern bathroom has plenty of character, with an oversize soaking tub and shower, and a decorative accent wall.

Crafting a modern, elegant bath was the goal of this New Rochelle renovation, while maximizing the small space for storage. Functionality and aesthetics were considered when reconfiguring the space for more practical use. Large-format charcoal porcelain tiles wrap the walls, for an air of sophistication. A custom-framed full wall mirror with integrated LED vertical lights sits above a custom-designed double-sink vanity with brushed-nickel Graff faucets, yielding a luxe vibe. Light-gray heated porcelain floor tiles lead to a water closet with a frosted-glass pocket door. A zero-threshold shower entry enhances the clean look and a shower skylight offers natural light and sky views, providing a truly luxurious escape.

This gut renovation of a primary bath in a Georgian brick home in Scarsdale was undertaken to create a modern, light-filled environment. Recycled glass slab and lights were used to create an iridescent glowing source of light. The wall behind the shower, made of polished porcelain slab (selected for its durability) was laid in a repetitious pattern to create a bookend effect and highlight the double shower. The result is a sleek, minimalist look that creates an at-home, spa-like ambience.

The goal for this young, busy family was to create a space that offered functionality, plenty of storage, and a seamless flow. Two islands were incorporated (one for prep, the other for eating) to help with organization. Lighter woods and porcelain countertops were selected for visual interest. Wolf appliances and a backsplash with bold veining above the stovetop are upscale additions. Trendy open shelving allows ease of access. The open-concept design (the kitchen opens to a dining area, bar, and living area) works well for the Rye family’s lifestyle, as they spend a lot of time in the heart of the home.

The unique at-home retreat in Rye features comfortable seating and work tables that allow for both relaxing (while looking out at sunsets across Milton Point Harbor) and creative endeavors that are inspired by the tranquility of the space. The interior is filled with antique finds from Ireland, such as a marble-topped washstand, brass ships’ lights, and other nautical accents. The unusual lead roof and glass French doors add to the enchantment of the tiny getaway.

This oversize Pound Ridge walk-in was designed for both homeowners as a his-and-hers space. The sophisticated married couple wanted to create a closet that inspired the feel of a boutique, with glass doors and lighting for display. The closet (which offers ample hanging storage, drawers, and pullout racks) features a finish of Tennessee walnut, a textured wood-laminate finish, and brass hardware. The closets and drawers themselves, the pulls, and the floors share a neutral color palette, for a clean design that lends to an organized space. There are designated cabinets for shoe storage and shelving for T-shorts, sweaters, leisurewear, etc. At the top is an open cubby display area for the clients’ designer boxes, luggage, purses, etc.

Though powder rooms don’t typically take center stage, this one in Rye Brook is an exception. Below the gold-foil wallpaper that graces the ceiling is a dark and evocative wallcovering by Thibaut that features a 3D abstract pattern in relief with a textured gray paint sporting metallic accents. The bespoke Worlds Away concept vanity is literally one-of-a-kind, framed by a soft-light ceiling fixture in a two-tiered floral pattern and Circa Lighting sconces. The stunning motif is capped by Benjamin Levy original wall art, which the homeowner has had since childhood.

A historic but dilapidated carriage house was completely redone to become a light-filled pool house as part of a recent backyard renovation in Rye. The result is a fun yet functional space with a full kitchen and a sliding window to a complete outdoor grilling area and bar, as well as a game space and a full shower and bathroom hidden behind a sliding door. What was once an eyesore in the client’s backyard is now one of their most used areas year-round.

The design of this spectacular pool house in Bedford addresses a range of needs, including both intimate family moments and large gatherings of many guests in the music industry. The design team was inspired to harness full transparency into the enclave while providing privacy and hidden scale around the three sides. It features a large, open-plan gathering room complete with a wood-burning fireplace that opens directly onto the terrace by large folding French doors, as well as a media wall, game areas, and an open, full-service kitchen/bar area with adjacent café-table seating. The pool-and-terrace area anchors the enclave, featuring a 1,150-square-foot cabana/ entertainment-cottage-like structure at one end and multilevel seating grottos, with a central outdoor fireplace, at the other end. Also included are his/ her changing-room / bath suites, full basement with laundry room, storage areas, and state-of-the-art sound and Wi-Fi systems for seamless interior and exterior audio. The result is an at-home getaway much in demand for both family gatherings and entertaining all year long.

The unexpected upper level of this Scarsdale Tudor is designed with exposed brick walls and features a modern staircase leading to a third floor that seems more like a Zen oasis. The optimized design space (which can also be reached by elevator) was transformed into a spa area that includes a sauna, massage room, hot-yoga room, and a large place for gym equipment. Mirrors and other smooth surfaces create a clean and airy feel, along with wood floors and neutral tones, which evoke a peaceful vibe.

Nest Inspired Home
The existing oak bar of a Prohibition-era speakeasy became the centerpiece of a transformation inside this 1920 Tudor in Rye. The overlooked space was remodeled into an inviting gathering spot and game room. Using high-lacquer matching cabinetry, heated floors, and fresh upholstery on vintage-sourced bar stools, the bar was brought to life. Complemented by a sunken seating area, dashes of warm color and surrounding glass and stone textures, it is the center of hang-at-home comfort and style.

Conventional wood framing and a concrete slab foundation mark the simplicity behind this modern, 500-square-foot “scenic shed” in Hastings-on-Hudson. Set in a natural landscape, the low-maintenance, white-stucco exterior blends in with every season. In an effort to minimize labor and complexity, the roof was designed using clear span beams with incrementally pitched rafters, which both simplifies framing connections and eliminates the need for gutters, with storm-water collection directed to a single point. Created as a leisure space, the shed features interior walls that are finished in red cedar and an in-ground spa concealed under removable deck panels. Floors are covered in clefted slate pavers. A wood-burning stove provides heat, and in good weather, the doors and windows unfold to open the space to the garden.

These Rye homeowners are able to soak up great design anytime they enter this primary bathroom, completely updated from an original 1990 construction. The star of the room is a wide, freestanding tub positioned in the center. A corner shower was remodeled with full-height porcelain slabs, a towel warmer, and a wide bench seat, while an antique makeup table rests nearby. To boost convenience and maximize storage, the perimeter walls received JWH custom inset cabinetry and a double-sink vanity with extra room to stow away items. To add a bit of drama, dark-blue/black stained hardwood floors, soft blue-gray cabinetry, and Azul Cintilante polished-marble countertops were set off by the stylish Schumacher wallpaper, Feather Bloom, and polished-nickel fixtures by Schaub cabinet hardware.

This bright and welcoming white bathroom is a feast for the eyes. The designers created it as part of a new-home build in Stanfordville, striving to make the space both open and wheelchair accessible for a retired couple. Despite the ample room they had to work with, Contelmo and his team strived for efficiency while borrowing inspiration from the equestrian pastures that surround the home. To do so, they focused on modernizing bold, traditional elements, including his-and-hers vanities, a separate water closet, a sauna, and a dramatic freestanding tub adjacent to the arched-top French doors from which the owners can enjoy a nearby pasture and winding creek any time of day. The couple wanted to share the same spaces yet also be separate.

Designer Jason Landau created a peaceful sanctuary of calming grays and whites through heavy use of Carrara tile in this elegant Rye bathroom. However, Landau wanted to add some surprising twists and turns to the room, which he did through use of tile in unusual ways. This includes a chevron pattern in the millwork above the vanity, which complements the shower walls and floor, where a tile rug has been inlaid. Additionally, this placid master bathroom boasts a double light-gray vanity as well as three flush-mounted medicine cabinets and polished-nickel accents, to add a touch of sparkle.

“Classic” is the appropriate word to describe the kitchen of this historic home in Rye. Rising from the large-format limestone flooring (by Country Floors) is an aesthetic mélange of painted and natural-walnut finishes. The custom cabinetry by JWH in Weathered Trellis features raised-panel inset doors with exposed nickel hinges. The walnut theme extends to the center island, which boasts a Rohl Shaws apron front sink, and is repeated on the custom hood detail and interior cabinet shelves. The built-in window seat not only disguises the radiator but also provides a cozy spot for family meals.

The owners of this commodious center-hall Colonial in Larchmont had already revamped the entire home but left the kitchen for last. Enter the designer, who composed a palette of finishes that included shades of gray/blue, creamy beige, and pale oak before installing opulent Calacatta marble countertops and a backsplash. A zinc statement range hood fills out the range wall and confers a comforting patina of age and place. Other compelling elements include a white-oak breakfast bar with aged, brass-mesh doors and matching apothecary pullouts, along with more brass hardware, lighting, and fixtures, synergistically extolling the modern virtues of antiquity. The all-white builder kitchen lacked character, and the clients wanted to inject color, texture, and personality while keeping it classic. The designers goal was to design a dream kitchen that revamped the space into a personal and personality-filled space for the clients, a family of five. Another goal of the project was to solve storage and flow problems, including an oddly-shaped island, poorly placed main sink, and a disorganized food pantry.

This kitchen was a part of a first-floor gut reno in Larchmont that transformed multiple rooms to an airy, light-filled space. The clients are a growing, young family, with a 2-year-old, another on the way, and plans to have more. They wanted to remodel the living and kitchen space, as they enjoy functional, cozy spaces to eat, play, rest, and be together. The timeless design suggests a California coastal vibe, with watery ceramic tiles and dove-gray custom kitchen cabinetry complementing the warm wood tones of the floor and beams. Maximizing interest and character, reclaimed beams were sourced and installed at the end of the cabinet run, as if they’d always been there. Finishing touches include an antique pewter Waterstone faucet and filter, and Caesar-stone Frosty Carrina quartz countertops; linen shaded sconces; a gray, cerused oak-wood island (with wine fridge and prep sink) with cone-shaped pendant lights above.

This Hudson Valley lakefront home is a willow-framed tour de force. Drenched in ambient light from all directions, thanks to banks of oversize glass, the designer was savvy to nourish dwellers and guests with a minimalist approach to the interior spaces, yielding a serene yet gallery-like space for her Gallatin clients and their art collection. Gabled rooflines, local natural stone, and Thermory cladding further catalyze the home’s august impression. Other unique features include a double-height cathedral ceiling and grand scissor trusses in the great room, along with capacious dining and kitchen spaces that flow seamlessly to the outdoor terrace. The entire tableau is anchored by a sculptural central staircase of glass and steel.

This shingle-revival home design was inspired by the local vernacular and bucolic views on this 300-acre horse farm in Stanfordville. With entertaining guests and accessing the incredible views as priorities, the property was assiduously cleared, and the structure’s footprint was aligned accordingly. Two long wings meet at a right angle, maximizing the window area and offering distinct views. The floor plans for the “public” areas were kept open, with clear sightlines. The more private areas provide cozy spaces conducive to family living. Other alluring features include a wraparound porch, master-bedroom garden, and formal courtyard.

Coastline Modern Houses
Parallel rooftops (a rare sight in Westchester) that appear to slide into each other like the sails of a ship in motion is the feature that sets apart this contemporary home inspired by the coastal community, just steps from the Mamaroneck harbor. Abundant floor-to-ceiling windows (separated by elegant stacked-stone columns on the first level) bring the outside in, while every room in the house has direct access to outdoor spaces, a concrete patio, and a stretched balcony.

This nearly 5,500-square-foot home in Mount Vernon features a front entry with Saratoga Granite piers, bay windows, and gable rooflines. The asymmetry offers a modern look, and a standing seam metal roof and horizontal steel railings create an industrial feel. Black-stained modern siding is inspired by shou sugi ban, the Japanese art of preserving wood by charring it with fire. The dark stain on knotty cedar ship-lap siding offers a rustic flair, while clear cedar installed at the soffits and porch ceilings allows for a unique look.

The overall design of this classic Georgian home in Scarsdale introduces an eclectic mix of modern and midcentury influences to its traditional architecture. The owner’s passion for painting drove the design to allow the display of his large, modern canvases, featuring swaths of color. The dining room, painted gray to make those colors pop, features blue-velvet Klismos chairs with a marble table imported from Portugal. Other rooms, including a study with deep-blue walls and a library, were carefully curated to create a cohesive and inviting home.

The team was tasked with creating a Hudson Valley gem in Stanfordville that would be sophisticated and suitable, situated on the 300-acre working horse farm that the clients own. They made a conscious effort to bring together both suburban and rural style living. The footprint of the house was placed on the property where the homeowners could best enjoy the rustic landscape. The goal was for a design that would support entertaining large crowds in a comfortable environment. The public areas of the home — the entry, family and dining rooms, and kitchen (which features a large island) — have an open floor plan, while the more private areas feature intimate spaces. Statement-making lighting fixtures, bold wallpaper, and elegant furnishings lend to an impressive space. The home also boasts private offices, a game room, a wine cellar, 20-seat theater, and an indoor pool.

The new homeowners of this ground-up project in Harrison wanted a modern and sophisticated yet family-friendly home in which to raise their four children. While the house has a decidedly warm palette, the owners selected bright and colorful abstract art to personalize the space. Design features include furniture by Altura, Mattaliano, and Holly Hunt, along with statement lighting by The Urban Electric Co. Furniture from ducduc in NYC was selected to create children’s bedrooms, which are both functional and colorful.

The striking interior of this Larchmont Dutch Colonial reveals itself upon entry, with three bespoke rope-wrapped globes, asymmetrically hung, over luscious wide-plank floors in walnut. The vision was a modern classic/ vintage with a Southern flair, and the clients wanted it designed conducive to a casual and fun lifestyle. The dramatic miseen-scène continues amid 10-foot first-floor ceilings with 12-foot ceilings on the second floor, showcasing the superior architectural bones of the structure. The gourmet kitchen with customized lighting serves as an elegant harbinger for the textures and light fabrics that await in the family room and dining room, punctuated by bold splashes of color and tastefully art-filled spaces.
