Explore Westchester Magazine’s 2014 Dream Home

Talk about living large: 5,400 square feet of space and floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows with 360-degree views of Westchester, the Manhattan skyline, and the Long Island Sound. For our third Dream Home project, Westchester Magazine partnered with the Cappelli Organization, developer of The Ritz-Carlton, Westchester, and its two residential towers, along with lead designer Barbara Bell of Barbara Bell Interiors in Tarrytown, who worked as the creative director to develop the overall look of the penthouse with the sponsors. In her two-decade-plus career, Bell has designed many high-end residential and commercial interiors, historical properties, and model rooms throughout the tri-state area, but the Dream Home project was unique.

“This is a one-of-a-kind property with unbelievable views, glorious light, high ceilings, and huge volumes of space,” Bell says. “I envisioned it as a modern interior with luxurious materials and furnishings representing the best in contemporary design. What impressed me most was the wealth of materials and resources that were available right here in Westchester. It’s been a challenging—but unbelievably exciting and interesting—job.”

Front row seats for a spectacular sunset. From this perch, one has 360-degree views of Westchester, the Manhattan skyline, and Long Island Sound.

And we think the result is unbelievably exciting and interesting, too. Modern, dramatic, luxurious, functional: From the first step into the elegantly appointed foyer to the wow-worthy kitchen to the dreamy master suite, everything from the furniture to finishings is sophisticated and refined, lush, and yet remarkably livable. The open, airy living room, for example, is the perfect mix of luxury and comfort, creating an ideal setting for entertaining, enjoying quiet downtime, or doing some very serious stargazing.

A team of five designers from Bilotta Kitchens, led by senior designer Jeff Eakley, created an expansive European-style space with Gaggenau appliances, laminate high-gloss countertops, suede Gazzini porcelain floor tiles, and a waterfall granite countertop. The centerpiece gears in the Roche Bobois Astrolab dining table (pictured at right) are not just cool-looking—they’re functional, too, working to raise the table’s extension leaves on each side to accommodate more people.

Entertaining guests is made easier with the Ralph Lauren Duke bar from Safavieh and the Michael Wainwright barware from Current Home in Scarsdale. Hunter Douglas motorized shades by Greenwich Window Treatments control glare; artwork is from Madelyn Jordon of Madelyn Jordon Fine Art in Scarsdale; the Brazilian amethyst from Architectural Minerals & Stone; white orchid arrangement and 6-foot fiddle leaf fig tree by Joseph Richard Florals.

The master bedroom suite is an apartment in itself—a sweet retreat with spacious sleeping and sitting areas, two walk-in dressing rooms, and a deluxe bathroom with his-and-her soaking tubs, as well as a triple shower with an overhead rain ceiling, waterfall massage, and shower base. There’s even a built-in shower music system to accompany you while you sing.

Unlike other high-profile show houses, this one will be sold, either as is or unfurnished. Nancy Kennedy, Houlihan Lawrence’s listing agent for the Dream Home, has a pretty good idea of what it will take to sell the property—she happens to be a resident of The Residences herself. “The building is beautiful, the level of service is phenomenal, the neighborhood is so accessible with an unbelievable number of diverse restaurants all within walking distance,” Kennedy says, adding that sales picked up after the Dream Home was built. “We suddenly had buyers for the units above and below. It’s been our bestselling tool. It shows there is no limit to what you can create.”

Westchester Magazine invites you to see for yourself. Tours will be held Fridays through Sundays from September 12 through October 19 from 10 am to 4 pm. There will also be a series of events  open to the public. Visit the Dream Home page for more photographs and videos; click on Tickets/Tours for details. Proceeds from the tours will help support My Sisters’ Place, a White Plains-based organization committed to eliminating domestic violence.

Jeff Eakley of Bilotta Kitchens in Mamaroneck was the lead in this stunning kitchen. The Gaggenau appliances from Leiberts Royal Green Appliance Center were paired with European laminate, high-gloss countertops to give a clean, sleek look that’s easy to maintain. The penthouse’s tones are carried through the kitchen in the flooring (suede 12” x 24” Gazzini porcelain tile). The cooktop, sink, and media area backsplash are Decorativa’s SoHo series in gold and silver; all perimeter backsplash is honed vein-cut Timber Grey marble, all from Terra Tile & Marble. Mounted TV is from Elite Design Systems.

Designed by Rob Springer of Stickley, Audi & Co in White Plains, the master suite showcases Stickley’s new Uptown collection. Divided into zones, the suite offers a luxuriouly appointed seating area, intimate dining space, and, of course, a place for sleeping. Wall-to-wall hand-loomed carpet is by ABC Carpet & Home.

Once you step into this plush oasis, designed by Joseph Passero, owner of Klaff’s in Scarsdale, you may never want to leave. The twin Tulip tubs from Wetstyle’s Frame Collection offer a perfect spot to soak in the views. The oversize shower is designed for two, with a center bench in between; each has identical ceiling-mount rain heads and waterfall massages from Aquabrass. Custom frameless shower doors are from White Plains Glass & Mirror.

Lisa McTernan of Lifestyles & Interiors by Lisa in Croton-on-Hudson created a design and soft color palette to reflect living in the clouds with hues of white, gray, and blue skies for the penthouse guest suite, which has a walk-in closet and en suite bath.
Hanging out at the oversized center island is also an option and a natural focal point, thanks to the waterfall granite countertop from Terra Tile & Marble. The white Jolly bar stools, Gulliver floor lamp, Cristal chandelier, and Astrolab dining-table set (note the gears that work the table extensions) are from Roche Bobois; tabletop décor, cart barware, and accessories, including serving pieces, are from Current Home.

The den, designed by Cindy Susilo of Roche Bobois in Manhattan, works equally well as a home office with a niche outfitted with a desk, built-in shelving, and discreet storage. The eye-popping wall art is actually wallpaper created exclusively for Roche Bobois.
