This Chappaqua property, with its strict setback requirements and a 10- to 12-foot drop-off, posed a design challenge, even with four acres to play with. “I had worked on the redesign of the clients’ original home, and, when they found the land for this house, I was thrilled when they asked me to do this project, as difficult as it was,” says architect Daniel Contelmo. To accommodate the landscape, he designed the home to have two stories in front and three in the back, allowing for a walkout basement that includes a wine cellar, 19-seat home theater, and a billiard room. Two wings with stone facing on either side of the front door ground the house while an angled garage wing responds to the natural contours of the landscape. At 12,000 square feet, this home is large, even by Westchester standards, but Contelmo says each room feels personal and the residents don’t feel dwarfed by the space. Indeed, they are grateful to be living in such fine style. The judges were unanimous in their praise, all proclaiming it “gorgeous.”
