Best Places to Live 2018: City Center, New Rochelle

Like other urban centers in Westchester, the Queen City on the Sound is undergoing a facelift. The county’s second-most populous city features a downtown that has something for everyone, including those looking for a little bite of urban life. The expansive reimagining is being spearheaded in a close partnership between the city and master developer RXR Realty, who are working to produce a community-oriented, mixed-use, transit-oriented-development model worthy of imitation nationwide. Ultimately, the project is expected to attract more than $4 billion in new investment to the city.

“New Rochelle is kind of like a mini-Big Apple,” explains Zachary Harrison, a licensed broker with Compass Realty in Scarsdale. “It’s really a transportation hub. You have an easy train commute into the city and Amtrak access to major cities and towns on the eastern seaboard — easy access to the Hutch and I-95, too.”

The New Roc City entertainment-and-retail complex heralded the arrival of the City Center revitalization upon its opening in 1999. Nearly all of the condo and rental properties that have been constructed since — including luxury apartments and more no-frills options —are an easy walk to the train and to myriad dining and shopping options along the Main Street and Huguenot Street corridors. “There’s something for everybody here,” says Glorianne Mattesi of Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Scarsdale. “And the diversity in pricing reflects that.”
