Best Use of Color

Sara Touijer: Touijer Designs

Location: Mamaroneck

This house is located very close to the Long Island Sound, so designer Sara Touijer drew inspiration from the water. For the color palette, she used different variations of blue. She started literally from the ground up — with the rug, which gives a subtle nod to the water. And because this home is for a family of five and their pet, elegance, durability, and coziness were all priorities. The family also loves Art Deco, so the designer brought that style into certain rooms, complementing the transitional look of the spaces.

Claire Paquin: Clean Design Partners

Location: Hartsdale

This room is the hub of the home, as it is open to the kitchen and the breakfast area and gets a lot of traffic. This family of four moved from Madrid and is well-traveled, so they wanted this space to be functional while showcasing their personalities and experiences. The vibrant color scheme flowed from the bold, geometric drapes that are the focal point of the space. Designer Claire Paquin kept the rug and upholstery pieces neutral, to let the bold colors really shine.

Lisa McTernan: Lifestyles and Interiors by Lisa

Location: Scarsdale

The goal for the design of this den was to set it apart from the rest of the light-filled house and create a cozy cocoon. Designer Lisa McTernan chose a soft palette of grays to create this look. The monochromatic canvas is dotted with deep blue, and the original art is by Staszek Kotowski.

The client for this dining room, which was part of a larger project, wanted big and bold, so the designer answered with citrine curtains, gold-and-navy chairs, and custom-designed wallpaper. The marble table plays off the patterned wallpaper, and the room is spattered with bright hues. It all comes together in a modern and unique design.
