The alfresco retreat overlooking Mamaroneck harbor serves as a backyard and one-stop summertime spot for the family to enjoy.
It’s a relief when you want to spend more quality time en plein air, you can simply step outside to a peaceful sanctuary, right on your own property. This lush landscape and outdoor oasis were designed for a family who not only wanted to renovate the interior of their Tudor, but also elevate the outdoor spaces for family members – including their growing children — and guests.
The design dream team consisted of Jancski Landscape Architects, Wagner Pools, and Keller/Eaton Architects. The goal for the outdoor space was to “tastefully integrate the design with the house,” says Sean Jancski, in addition to preserving the existing ecological system by the water and incorporating a pool without changing the character of the landscape. (The irregularity and sloping condition of the site required a creative way to accomplish these goals, explains Jancski.) The result was a raised terrace, which provides direct access from the inside to the pool patio, and an infinity-edge pool that overlook the harbor. Meanwhile, lounging and gathering areas by the pool abound. Jancski says, “The infinity-edge pool has the backdrop of the harbor beyond, and lush plantings anchor the pool to the site.” A combination of colorful perennials, beach grasses, and evergreens provide interesting colors, heights and textures for the entire year, making this outdoor environment “inviting and full of life,” says Jancski.
