A Soothing Oasis (That’s Family-Friendly, Too)

A busy banking professional couple with two young boys and a pair of yellow Labs hired Susan Carlson of Susan Carlson Interiors in Bedford to redesign their 2013 Armonk Colonial after they moved there from a Manhattan apartment. They especially wanted to refashion the 400-square-foot master into a relaxing retreat. However, from a practical perspective, they also wanted the room to be approachable and comfortable for time spent there with their children and dogs. The wife loved the curtain fabric with taupe, cream, gray, and several shades of blue (including lapis, French blue, and azure), which became the jumping-off point for the design. Because the curtains had so much color and pattern, other elements were kept quieter. “We played with texture and sheen to keep things interesting—the velvet on the custom-made bed has a beautiful shimmer, while the blue faux suede on the bench is matte,” says Carlson. The acrylic legs on the bench, crystal beads on the chandelier, and crystal knobs on the nightstands add hints of sparkle and a touch of glamour to this fresh yet timeless space.

Bringing It Home: Susan Carlson’s Tips

“This is the most personal room in the house, so live with what you love, whether it’s your curtain fabric or a sentimental piece of furniture.”

Your room’s functions beyond just a place to sleep.
“If you love to read or knit in the evenings, find a spot for a good chair and incorporate task lighting.”
