Westchester resident Anne-Marie Kavulla owns Pirtti Handwoven and runs the business through her home office. She is a weaver and the home office is decorated and furnished with everything she could possibly need. Here, she offers up tips for creating a stylish and functional home office of your own.
Carving Out Space
The type and size of space will vary based on the type of work to be done. Some home offices can be carved out of a nook, for example, my husband, who also works from home, only needs enough space for himself and his computer. Other home offices require a lot more space. I need space for a floor loom and cabinets filled with yarn. What we have in common with our spaces is enough room to walk around a bit and windows for natural light and fresh air.

Kavulla needs a lot of floor space, so having a yarn cabinet helps to keep her organized. Essential Items
1. A door: Sometimes you need to be able to shut the door to get stuff done!
2. Storage: Particularly taking advantage of vertical storage. I use boards, pocket storage, and hooks with great success.
3. Comfortable furniture: I often have to sit for long periods of time, whether at the loom, my computer or on the floor. Comfort is key! It can be as simple as throwing a lambskin on your seat or investing in an ergonomic chair.
4. Headphones: Sometimes to make a deadline you need to tune out and shutting the door is not enough. Whether that be the standard headphones that come with your iPhone or fancy noise cancelling headphones. The doors to my studio are glass, which is great as I can keep an eye on my children and they can see me. However, if my headphones are on, everyone knows I mean business and they should not disturb!
What About Productivity?
Being a visual person, I find vertical organization extremely helpful. I like to see my notes and ideas so I have a large board where I can pin my inspiration, ideas and reminders. I also constantly tape things to the wall using washi tape. Keeping my thoughts literally organized at eye level helps me find my notes when I need them and keeps my surfaces clear for other items.
Personalizing Your Space
I prefer a neutral, light palette for my studio. Grey is my white, so almost everything in my studio is grey, white, or a combination of the two. This makes my studio bright and welcoming and allows my yarns to sing. I believe if you love the items you choose, they will all work together. So whether I’m picking out storage boxes, washi tape, or pins for my board, if it delights me, it works for the room.

Clutter is my constant battle! My creative process involves chaos so I’m constantly trying to find ways to let the chaos happen without it taking over my workspace. My best examples of clutter free success is when I give everything it’s space to be kept. Everything has to have a home. I have baskets and hooks for everything. Once the homes have been designated, the habit to put things away in their place happens very naturally. Everything is in its place, close to where I tend to use it. Productivity goes up, clutter goes down!
