11 am: Specifying Emergency Generators for Your Residential Projects
Michael Liebler, of Power Performance Industries (www.ppipowersystems.com), will help participants understand the essentials of residential emergency generators, including a technical overview, how to size a generator, factory code compliance, and assessing the need for a generator, and where to place the units.
Noon: Designing Dedicated Theaters
Tom Howard, of Performance Imaging (www.performanceimaging.net), will cover basic definition of a dedicated home theater—what it is and what it isn’t, the science of “good sound,” common mistakes in designing theaters, and design considerations related to video, lighting, electrical, and safety and comfort. The session (eligible for AIA/ASID HSW CEU credit) also gives practical guidance on outfitting the room, from equipment to wall treatments to seating.
1:30 pm: Designing Wine Cellars
A session led by Evan Goldenberg, of Design Build Consultants (www.customwinecellars.com), focuses on current wine cellar design trends, customizing for space and budget, transforming unfinished and existing spaces, refrigeration, and sustainable design.

Jacques Jarrige Sculptural Functional Furniture Exhibit

Last chance to see the one-of-a-kind distinctive sculptural, yet functional, furniture of artist-artisan Jacques Jarrige. The “Meanders”: Furniture in Movement exhibit runs through Friday, July 20, at the Valerie Goodman Gallery (315 E 91st St, Manhattan) known for presenting work by important contemporary French artists. The signature exhibit features Jarrige’s never-before-seen, functional art creations—including sculpted cabinets, room dividers, desks, and lighting—that the gallery describes as suggesting “both the uneven meanderings of nature and the sophisticated comfort of urban modernity.” Jarrige describes his creative process as starting with drawings then works with a variety of materials as needed, such as bending iron and sculpting wood, to bring his visions to life with whimsy and spirituality. This year’s Design Awards Program, sponsored annually by the American Institute of Architects Westchester & Hudson Valley (AIAWHV) is gearing up to honor projects demonstrating excellence in design—an architect’s chance to shine. Interested architects must register their projects by Sunday, July 15, in preparation for submitting entries by the August 13 deadline. The awards program recognizes projects that have made “a positive aesthetic and social contribution to the built environment, and as a result, have increased public awareness of quality architectural design.” Eligible projects range from built (if completed between January 2008 and August 2012) to un-built and other projects. Award-winning projects will be recognized at a gala award ceremony in November.
