There are certain ways to prepare your home for spring in Westchester. Residents will soon prep their gardens for the warm weather, declutter that winter stockpile, and swap the winter linens for a fresh and vibrant look. This substitute is essential and makes all the difference when readying your home for spring.
We asked local experts to help make sure your home looks its best when spring comes knocking on the door. We chatted with Sara Touijer, founder of Sara Touijer Designs, and Shannon Murray, owner and principal designer of Shannon Murray Interiors, on how to equip your home with the finest linens. Here’s what they had to say.
Swap out those thick cotton sheets for a feathery number. When picking out linens, especially for the bedroom, it’s best to search for lightweight options. Springtime presents us with warm weather, so let the warm weather and sunlight reflect your home design.
“Go with lighter-weight materials. You want your home to reflect the season: light and airy,” says Touijer.
Our Pick: This Linen Venice Set is convenient as you don’t have to shop around for separate pieces. The set comes in 11 colors and allows you to pick between adding a top sheet or keeping it out of the package.
When scoping out the linen section, don’t lean too far into the theme. Yes, we’re happy it’s spring, too. But letting the colors of your linens and how you display them speak for themselves goes a long way. And picking neutral tones allows you to keep previous decorations in your home.
“Neutrals work best as they will blend with any existing home décor. A griege linen, soft butter yellow, or soft sky blue, for example,” says Murray.
Our Pick: This neutral tablecloth is perfect for any occasion or everyday use. Also, try out these towels for your bathroom.
Come April, spring will have taken over your home. Now is your time to prepare. Think about your home and what linens could use upgrading. Now, consider how can you incorporate that theme throughout your home.
“Pick a color theme and stick with it throughout the house. Consistency and multiples of the same color tells a story and weaves a theme throughout your home,” says Murray.
Our picks: If you can’t keep it consistent throughout the home, you might as well keep it consistent in the dining room. Get your hands on this lavender tablecloth and matching napkin set, which are ideal for a fun brunch with your friends. Displaying this tablecloth in your dining room will add a joyful hue while keeping it classy. Plus, it’s washable!
If you are looking for a fun pop of color when shopping for spring linens, listen up. Springtime and floral décor go together like peanut butter and jelly. Don’t be afraid to add some color to your bedroom, dining table, or bathroom.
“One timeless, staple linen, when it comes to tabletop linens, is a botanical or floral print tablecloth in your favorite color. It’s so much easier to hide red wine spills and food,” Touijer says, adding that she loves the functionality of a piece like this.
Our picks: Look no further than this floral tablecloth and delicate green napkins. If you’re on the hunt for curtains, these natural-toned floral curtains could do the trick.
Although we’re springing ahead, it’s crucial to have some timeless staples in the home. Think back to a time when a simple tablecloth or napkin would have come in handy for a dinner party.
“Cloth napkins are a classic staple everyone should own. They are good for the environment, elevate your dining experience as well as dress up your tablescape. Choose a washable linen in a classic color such as ivory, beige or white, and add a monogram for a personal touch,” says Murray.
Our pick: When it comes to picking spring linens, you can’t go wrong with a classic ivory napkin set.
Pro tip: Invite elegance to your dinner table with a set of lavender napkin rings.
Once you have your linen lineup, make sure you keep them on display. It’s important to present the light-toned linens to keep the vibrant vibe going throughout your home.
“Put them out on display — keep placemats and napkins on the table when not in use, hang new hand towels in the powder room, stack tea towels in large glass jar and display on your kitchen counter. Roll towels in a large basket on the floor of a bathroom,” notes Murray.
Our picks: Check out these sunny floral placemats. If you’re on the hunt for neutral placemat during your search for spring linens, you won’t want to miss out on this set. For the bathroom, display an attractive hand towel for your guests. Or, go for bold, printed shower curtain.
